Ohio State Head Coach Linda Kalafatis
On the game …
“We haven’t been very successful on this field so it’s good to get our first one done and over with. I thought our kids played really good ball and hit the ball hard. I think we had 11 hits on the scoreboard, but we had a lot of hard shots. Stacy Roth probably hit two of the harder balls, and obviously Kristine (Himes) picked out a couple of good ones. I thought the kids played loose, and that year of experience helped. Now we’ve got to win the close ones.”
On Wendy Allen …
“She was sharp. She got a little tired, and that’s something we have to watch for. Wendy’s No. 3 in the order so she tends to get up to bat a lot, and if she’s hitting and running a lot, she uses some wind, and along with the adrenaline that can tire you out anyway, she was getting tired there at the end. We knew that middle of the game and towards the end she started to miss a lot bigger, and that’s why we decided to go with (Katie) Chain.”
Illinois Head Coach Terri Sullivan
On the game …
“In postseason, especially tournament time, whether it’s your offense or another team’s offense, it feeds off of defense. This time, we didn’t play real sharp defense, and it kind of opened up the door in the second inning. They led it off with a home run, but I thought we could leave it at that. We were pitching out of a couple of situations, got the play we wanted, and just didn’t execute it, and that allowed them to make for a big inning. We never had much going offensively. You try to just poke away at that lead, and it didn’t happen. We need to play good defense to elevate the rest of our game, and we didn’t do that in that inning. We held them the rest of the way through, but we can’t take away the second inning.”
