COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State (11-4 overall, 4-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon in Athens, Ohio with a 12-6 victory over Ohio (9-6, 1-5). OSU’s 11 wins this season is a school record for wins in a season for the Buckeyes. Ohio State was 10-5 in 1999. The win also gives Ohio State a three-way tie (with Johns Hopkins and Penn State) for second place in the American Lacrosse Conference. Vanderbilt is the conference champion with a 6-0 record. The Buckeye defense was a major factor in the win, holding the Bobcats to six goals. Ohio was ranked ninth in the country with a 12.29 goals per game average. Midfielder Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) was a major part of the defense today with a game-high six caused turnovers. She added two draw controls, two ground balls, a goal and an assist in the game. Offensively Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) had a game-high five goals and added an assist for the Buckeyes. OSU’s Lauren Cochran (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) had two goals. Ohio’s Lynz Keys (So., Whitby, Ontario) had a team-high three goals for the Bobcats.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring just 1:17 into the game with a goal by Bounds. OSU’s Oliver made it 2-0 at 3:16. The Bobcats got on the scoreboard with a free position goal by Alyssa Trocher (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) at 3:13. Bounds made it 3-1 with her second goal at 6:04. Lauren Cochran, assisted by Bounds, made it 4-1 at 8:09. The Buckeyes made it 5-1 with a Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) goal at 11:19. Keys cut the lead to 5-2 for the Bobcats at 11:53. The Buckeyes finished out the half with a Carrie Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) goal, assisted by Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario) at 17:14 and a third goal by Bounds at 25:27 to made it 7-2, Ohio State at the half. The Bobcats opened the second half with a goal by Lindsey Hart (Jr., Vineland, Ontario) at 34:51 and Key’s second goal, a free position attempt, at 46:02 to cut the Ohio State lead to 7-4. The Buckeyes responded with a goal by Noemi Hites (So., Pleasanton, Calif.) at 46:34. Wilson tallied the next goal, with an Oliver assist, at 49:27 and Bounds’ fourth goal of the game at 51:08 gave OSU a 10-4 lead. Keys scored her third goal of the game for the Bobcats, on a free position attempt at 53:08 to make it 10-5. The Buckeyes countered with Cochran’s second goal of the game at 56:25 and with the fifth goal by Bounds at 58:44 to make the OSU lead 12-5. The Bobcats would close out the scoring with a Becky Oxman (So., Bryn Mawr, Pa.) goal, assisted by Meg Ryan (Fr., Exton, Pa.) at 59:50 for the final 12-6 Buckeye win.
Buckeye goalie Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) earned her 11th win of the season and had 15 saves in the contest.
Ohio State will find out at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, if the Buckeyes have been selected by the NCAA to participate in the NCAA Tournament.
