COLUMBUS, Ohio-The first round of the 2002 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship concluded Thursday morning with Illinois and Georgia Tech leading with a team score of 277. Both teams shot 7-under after 18 holes.
The tournament began Wednesday on The Ohio State University Scarlet Course but was suspended because of heavy rains until Thursday. The final 15 teams from the opening round Monday began play at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday and finished about 10:20 EDT.
The second round began at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, about 90 minutes behind schedule. The 30 teams will play 18 holes each day through Saturday in the 72-hole event.
Ten teams shot below par in the opening round.
Brock Mackenzie of Washington and Ben Portie of Colorado were the individual leaders at 5-under (66). Nicholas Thompson of Georgia Tech and Mark Warman, who is playing as an individual from San Diego State, are 4-under (67).
All four players who counted for both Georgia Tech and Illinois shot below par in Round 1.
