Columbus, Ohio (AP) — Top-ranked Georgia Tech, led by Troy Matteson’s 5-under-par 66, capped a long day to tie Clemson for the second-round lead Thursday in the NCAA golf championship.
Washington’s Brock Mackenzie put the finishing touches on a rain-delayed 66 early in the morning after a fog delay on the wet course, then shot a 69 to lead the individual race at 7-under 135.
North Carolina’s Dustin Bray and TCU’s Adam Rubinson are a shot back, with Bray shooting his second straight 68 and Rubinson adding a 67 after an opening 69.
Clemson’s D.J. Trahan, winner of the Ben Hogan Award given to the top collegiate player in the country, also shot a 66 as Clemson followed its opening 286 with a 277 four-man total. Trahan is at 5-under 137 and is tied with Arizona’s Chris Nallen and Justin Walters of North Carolina State, two shots back of Mackenzie.
Mid-American Conference champion Toledo was alone in third, a shot behind the co-leaders. North Carolina, TCU and Texas were at 566, followed by North Carolina State at 567. Defending champion Florida was eighth, six shots back, at 569.
Matteson was Georgia Tech’s low scorer with rounds of 73 and 66 that left him tied for 12th in the individual race at 139.
Half the teams had to arrive at the course at the break of dawn to complete the first round. Play had been suspended late Wednesday afternoon, forcing those who had yet to finish the first 18 holes to get up at 4:30 a.m. and begin play at 7:15 where they had marked their shots.
The last threesome of the second round putted out in almost total darkness to avoid having to return to the course at 6:30 Friday morning to complete their rounds.
Georgia Tech completed the first 18 holes in 7-under 277 to tie Illinois for the top spot before the Illini sank out the picture in the second round with a 296. The Yellow Jackets shot a 286 in the second round to finish at 5-under 563.
Play in the second round was again suspended for 46 minutes by rain and lightning late in the afternoon.
Mackenzie, a sophomore, birdied five of the first eight holes in the first round and finished with seven in his opening 66. He added three more birdies in the second round.
Ohio State’s Scarlet Course is hosting the tournament for a record 10th time.
