No. 20 Softball Places Three Players on Regional Academic Squads – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the No. 20 Ohio State softball team have been selected to the Verizon Academic All-District IV team the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced May 9. Stacy Roth (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) was named to the first team while Sarah West (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Hillard Davidson) and Wendy Allen (So., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) earned a spot on the second team as voted on by CoSIDA members in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. All three Buckeye players are first-time recipients of the award.
Roth, selected as a catcher, led the OSU selections with a 3.41 GPA in Human Ecology and Development. She is batting .384 for the Buckeyes this year with 14 home runs and 63 runs batted in. Her RBI total is a single-season record at OSU and adds to her career total if 163, also a record. Roth, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, has started 63 games this year and her RBI per game average is among the Top 20 in the nation. Roth is now up for Academic All-America honors.
Allen, who was recently named the Big Ten Player of the Year, holds a 3.58 GPA in general studies while in her second year at OSU and leads the team in several hitting and pitching categories. Her 0.88 ERA is the best among the Big Ten while also ranking as the fifth-best in a single-season at OSU. Allen is hitting .389 on the year with 72 hits and nine home runs while collecting the second-most RBI this year at 48. Allen, an outfielder/pitcher, also is second on the squad in slugging with a .643 average.
West has posted a 3.24 GPA as a criminology major at OSU while putting up big numbers on the field. She is hitting .310 this year and has played in all but three games for the Buckeyes at first base. West has clubbed eight home runs to help OSU set the single season program and conference record for homers in a year at 53 while collecting 49 total hits with six doubles and two triples. OSU placed the most names on the two teams with three and were followed by Chattanooga, Kentucky, Bowling Green, Kent State, Central Michigan and Alabama with two selections each. This marks the first time a Buckeye softball player has earned a district academic honor since Jaime Cheveny garnered the accolade in 1999.
