COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (7-5 overall, 3-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team held a 2-1 lead over No. 8 Ball State (12-1, 7-0) but fell to the Cardinals, 3-2 (30-26, 28-30, 26-30, 30-24, 15-13). OSU’s Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) scored a team-high 18 kills with Pieter Olree (Sr., Reading, Pa.) adding 17 and Ricardo Garcia (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico), a career-high 16. Ball State’s Tom Tegethoff (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) had a match-high 24 kills for the Cardinals with Kyle Weindel (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) adding 18 and Josh Zuidema (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.).
Ohio State held leads of 10-6 and 14-10 in game one. At 14-11, three OSU attack errors tied the game at 14. At 15-all, a block by Paul Fasshauer (Sr., Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and a kill by Fasshauer put Ball State ahead, 17-15. Olree’s kill cut the lead to 17-16. Ball State expanded the lead to 21-16 with a Weindel kill, a block by Keith Schunzel (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Matthew Denmark (Jr., Edmond, Okla.), a kill by Zuidema and a Buckeye ball handling error. The Cardinals maintained the lead, winning the game 30-26. Ohio State hit .250 for the game to .222 for Ball State.
The Buckeyes opened game two with a slim 3-1 lead. OSU built a lead of six (16-10) but Ball State cut the lead and tied the game at 22 on a service ace by Juan Carolos Lopez (Sr., Carolina, Puerto Rico). The game was tied at 23, 26 and 28 before a kill by Olree set game point at 29-28. On the play, BSU’s Denmark was injured and was helped off the court. A Cardinal attack error ended the game at 30-28, tying the match at one game each. Ohio State hit .216 for the game to .195 for the Cardinals. Ohio State opened game three with a 4-1 lead. The Cardinals responded going ahead 11-8. The Buckeyes rallied to tie the game at 13. After three more ties, OSU broke a 19-19 score with a kill by Trantow and a Ball State error to take a 21-19 lead. At 24-22, back-to-back kills by Olree opened up a four-point OSU lead at 26-22. At 28-24, a kill by Amatai Sasson (So., D.N. Menashe, Israel) and a block by Weindel and Sasson cut the Buckeye lead to two at 28-26. A kill by OSU’s Adam Pedersen (So., Muskego, Wis.) set game point at 29-26 and a Cardinal attack error ended the game at 30-26 giving OSU a 2-1 lead in the match. Ball State hit .379 for the game to .280 for Ohio State.
Game four saw 14 ties by the time the score reached 17-all. Four consecutive points by the Cardinals gave Ball State a 21-17 advantage. The run included a kill by Sasson, a block and kill by Weindel and a block by Weindel and Sasson. A Garcia kill and a Cardinal error cut the lead to 21-19. A Buckeye service error made it 22-19, BSU. Kills by Trantow and Tegethoff raised the score to 23-20. A Trantow kill cut the margin to 23-21. Ball State scored the next six points off Weindel’s serve. Cardinal kills by Weindel, Tegethoff and Zuidema and three OSU error made up the run to give Ball State a 29-21 lead. A kill and an ace serve by Trantow and a Cardinal error cut the lead to 29-24, but a Tegethoff kill ended the game at 30-24, tying the match at two games each. Ball State hit .389 for the game to .154 for Ohio State.
Ball State took a 3-0 lead in the fifth game with kills by Tegethoff and Schunzel and a Buckeye error. At 5-2 Ball State, the Cardinals pushed the lead to four (6-2) with a Sasson kill. With Ball State leading 8-4, two kills by Trantow and a block by Mark Peckham (So., London, Ontario) and Pedersen cut the lead to 8-7 as Ball State called time out. A Trantow kill tied the game at eight. A Buckeye service error returned the lead to Ball State at 9-8. A Pedersen kill tied the game at nine. A Cardinal block by Fasshauer and Weindel and a Buckeye error put Ball State ahead, 11-9. Ohio State cut the lead to 11-10 with a Garcia kill. A kill by Weindel made it 12-10, Ball State. A block by Pedersen and Olree cut the margin to 12-11. Zuidema’s kill made it 13-11, BSU. A Cardinal service error cut the lead to one at 13-12. Zuidema’s kill made it 14-12, setting match point for Ball State. The Buckeyes stopped the attempt with a Garcia kill (14-13) but Sasson’s kill ended the game at 15-13, giving the Cardinals the 3-2 win. Ball State hit .333 for the game to .158 for Ohio State.
Ball State hit .276 for the match to .213 for Ohio State. The Cardinals had an 83-67 advantage in kills. Each squad had two ace serves with OSU’s Trantow collecting a match-high two. Ball State had 17 service errors for the match to 11 for Ohio State. The Cardinals had a 51-44 advantage in digs with Josh Hall (Sr., Warminster, Pa.) and Weindel each recording a match-high 12. Tegethoff added 10 for the Cardinals. OSU’s Garcia had a career-high 11 for the Buckeyes with Mike Wauligman (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding a career-high 10. The Buckeyes had a 14 to 13.5 margin in blocks. Pedersen recorded a match-high seven assists for the Buckeyes with Peckhan adding six on a solo and five assists. BSU’s Weindel and Fasshauer each had six blocks in the match. Weindel had a solo and five assists with Fasshauer recording two solos and four assists. BSU had 79 assists in the match with Schunzel recording a match-high 72 for the Cardinals. Ohio State had 63 assists with Peckham receiving 57.
