COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team, 5-8-1 on the season, travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend to compete at the Big Ten Championships at the Canham Natatorium. The Buckeyes are looking to finish in the top half of the conference, improving on their finish from last year. The Buckeyes have placed first at the Big Ten Championships a total of five times in their history and have produced 71 overall Big Ten champions.
A Look At The Buckeyes
The Buckeyes are looking to better their 11th place finish at the Big Ten Championships a year ago. Natalia Diea (Sr., Austin, Texas/Texas) was the lone OSU Big Ten Champion last year, placing first in the 10-meter dive. Diea sat out the 2001-02 season due to a medical red-shirt. This year, juniors Melanie Johnson (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights) and Jillian Cicione (Jr., Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas) are looking to continue Diea’s feat. Johnson and Cicione have been very steady in the diving events in 2002. Both have consistently placed in the top five in the one and three-meter dives this year.
Kristin Sander (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) will lead the way for the Buckeyes in the swimming events. Sander will look to give the Buckeyes strong outings in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events. Newcomer Kylie Lancken (Fr., Sydney, Australia) will also help the Buckeyes’ cause in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Amanda Treleaven (So., Colonial Light, Australia/Norwood) offers good stability in the 100 and 200 backstroking events while Kristin Sendrowski (Sr., Garden City, N.Y./H.Frank Carey) leads the Buckeyes in the 100 and 200 butterfly events.

She is in her third season as head coach with a 14-23-1 overall dual meet record in her two plus seasons in Columbus. Before coming to Ohio State Fleck served as the head swimming coach at Northern Illinois for eight seasons and was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1999. Under Fleck, the Buckeyes doubled their win total in 2001 and again improved on that record this season. She also has produced 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections in her first two seasons at OSU.
Diving Head Coach Vince Panzano Now in his 24th year as head diving coach at Ohio State, Vince Panzano’s record speaks for itself. He has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. diving champions, eight NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up, 66 Big Ten champions and 76 All-Americans. Panzano also has been selected NCAA Diving Coach of the Year three times in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year six times.
