COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, Tuesday , Nov. 26, at 5 p.m. at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The Buckeyes have began a very impressive 2002-03 campaign with wins over Ohio, West Virginia, Louisville, Utah and Bowling Green.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Cleveland State is 3-3 to start the 2002-03 season.
The Vikings began their campaign against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, losing 136-84. Tina Abott had a big day, she placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:53.41 and in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:19.86.
Cleveland State fell to Bowling Green with a score of, 155-86. Abott placed first in the 500-free against the Falcons in a time of 5:16.22.
The Vikings fell to St. Bonaventure, 139-83. Abott placed first in the 1,000-free in a time of 10:51.83, second in the 200-free in a time of 1:59.69 and the 500-free in a time of 5:15.64.
CSU has won three consecutive meets against Baldwin-Wallace, Gannon and Niagra.
Samantha Jones is a big contributor to the swimming program who placed third in the 100-yard backstroke event in a time of :59.59 at the 2002 Horizon League Championships.
VIKINGS LAST TIME OUT
The Vikings have just come off of a third consecutive win at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
The Vikings competed against Niagra on Nov. 21, with a winning score of, 134-100.
The Vikings kicked off the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:56.
Sophomores Samantha Jones and Marlene Przkling both recorded top times in two events. Jones won both the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:03.25. Przkling placed first in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.05 and in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:03.39.
OSU BEATS BOWLING GREEN, 138-102
The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team won its fifth meet of the season with a 138-102 victory against Bowling Green Nov. 22, at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
Stephanie Raezar prepared the Buckeyes for victory by placing first in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:09.22. Raezar also, stepped up on the 800-yard freestyle relay team, which finished first in a time of 7:49.80.
Amanda Treleaven, excelled in the pool, placing first in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 59.05, the team’s season best. She also placed first in the 200 frees in a time of 1:56.08.
Deanna Strunk placed first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:11.66.
Kylie Lancken stepped up for the Buckeyes placing first in three events. Lancken won the 50 free in a time of 25.04 and also took victory in the 100 free with a season’s best time of 52.98. She also participated on the winning team in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Lancken, Nicole Maglich , Raezar and Katie Severson (also were members of that winning relay team that turned in a time of 7:49.80 in the 3-meter dive with a score of, 191.70. Jillian Cicione placed first in the 3-meter with a score of 198.00. She also placed second in the 1-meter with a score of 173.60.
In diving, Natalia Diea won the 1-meter dive with a score of, 196.10. She also placed second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 191.70. Jillian Cicione placed first in the 3-meter with a score of 198.00. She also placed second in the 1-meter with a score of 173.60.
THE BUCKEYES DOMINATE AGAINST UTAH, 130-111
Ohio State dominated against the Utes on Nov., 15 at 5 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
Ohio State kicked off the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:55.20 lead by Amanda Treleaven, Stephanie Raezar, Kylie Lancken and Kristinia Lipkis.
Deanna Strunk placed first in two events. She won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:06.68 and recorded the team’s best time of the season in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:08.38.
Nicole Maglich won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:00.84 the team’s best time of the season. Maglich also came in second in the 200-fly in a time of 2:08.01. Treleaven took first place in the 200-yard backstroke, in a time of 2:03.90, the team’s best time of the season.
Lancken recorded the team’s best time of the season in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.86.
In addition to swimming the second leg of the 400-yard medley relay, Raezar recorded the team’s best time of the season in the 200- IM where she placed second in a time of 2:08.58.
In diving, Natalia Diea won both diving events. She won the 1-meter with a score of 192.60 and she won the 3-meter with a score of 217.15, her best mark this season.
ABOUT COACH FLECK
Coach Jeanne Fleck enters her fourth season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s swimming program looking for her team to display excellence both in the water and classroom. She has become accustomed to both throughout her coaching career.
The Buckeyes also excelled in the classroom with an overall grade point average of 3.34 last season.
It was no coincidence that seven Buckeyes were named Academic All-Big Ten following the winter quarter and that 16 earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors. As a unit, the Ohio State women’s swimming program took home team Academic All-America honors awarded by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for the 2001-02 season. In three seasons, Fleck has engineered 25 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 41 OSU Scholar-Athlete honors. Fleck has geared the Buckeyes to one school record and two pool records.
ABOUT COACH PANZANO
Vince Panzano continues his legacy at Ohio State as he enters his 25th year as coach of the Buckeye men’s and women’s divers.
Panzano, who was named the 2002 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year (the seventh time he has earned the honor) has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two eight Americans.
