COLUMBUS, Ohio – Anna Volberg, a senior at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo, Ohio, has signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend Ohio State and join the women’s tennis team Autumn 2003. Volberg was the 2002 Ohio High School State Singles Champion as a senior, a state finalist her junior and sophomore year and placed fourth as a freshman. She is ranked 96th according to the Nov. 15 USTA Tentative Girl’s Junior 18 Singles Poll.
“Anna is a tremendous player that should be able to help us at the top of the line-up,” Chuck Merzbacher, OSU head women’s tennis coach, said. “She has had an excellent junior tennis career and has wins over top junior players across the nation. She plays with an amazing amount of power that is needed to succeed at the collegiate level.”
Volberg not only excels on the tennis court, but also in the classroom. At St. Ursula Academy, which is ranked in the Top 100 Catholic schools in the nation, she is enrolled in the honors program where she takes accelerated courses. She choose Ohio State over Big Ten rivals because of a “very strong tennis program and an excellent undergraduate pre-med program.”
“Signing the 2002 Ohio State High School State Singles Champion speaks a lot for the strides this program has made,” Merzbacher said. “We now are able to attract the top players in Ohio.”
