Women’s Swimming & Diving Plays Host to Utah and Travels to Miami (Ohio) – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will play host to Utah on Friday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The Buckeyes are off to an impressive 3-0 start with victories against Ohio, West Virginia and Louisville.
SCOUTING THE UTES
The Utah Utes are a young team, consisting of 13 freshmen and nine returning swimmers from last year’s team.
The squad is led by junior co-captains Kristen Kaiser and junior Neringa Statkeviciute, who have both impacted the team.
Kaiser owns the Mountain West Conference record in the 400-yard individual medley, and also holds school records in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 400 IM. She also participated on the 800-yard freestyle relay team that holds the school record.
Statkeviciute has been credited as one of the top freestlyers in the conference. She owns the school record in the 200 free and also was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that holds the Utah record.
Sophomore Tessa Greegor has emerged as the nation’s fastest breaststroker and last season, participated in the U.S. Phillips National Championships where she placed 13th in the 100 meters.
UTAH’S LAST MEET
Last week, the Utes competed in a double dual meet against UC-Santa Cruz, winning 142-97, and San Jose State, winning 133-108.
The Utes won in 13 out of 15 events, dominating the meet. Junior freestlyer Neringa Statkeviciute won the 50-yard freestyle (21.72) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.19). OHIO STATE FACES IN-STATE RIVAL
After facing Utah on Friday, Ohio State will bus to Oxford, Ohio to meet Miami, Ohio in a 2 p.m. meet on Saturday.
Sophomore Trisha Lamb has contributed to the backstoke and IM events, dominating the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events against Ball State.
Freshman diver Christin Ebert has stepped of the boards taking two first-place wins in the 1- and 3-meter dive events against Ball State.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE REDHAWKS
The RedHawks competed in a dual meet against University of Toledo and University of Akron last Saturday. The RedHawks defeated Toledo 188-112 and Akron 240-60.
Miami took first or second in all but two out of the 16 events. Trisha Lamb, junior Casey Mangano, freshman Katie Unger and senior Colleen Rambasek started the meet off with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.70). Junior Amy Miranda won the 1650-freestyle event with a top time of 17:53.92. Miranda became the second RedHawk to win two individual races after touching the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:00.44.
THE BUCKEYES DOMINATE AGAINST WEST VIRGINIA, LOUISVILLE
The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team won its second and third meets of the season last Friday in Morgantown, W.Va. Ohio State defeated host West Virginia 122-112 and then took a 149-85 decision over Louisville in the double-dual meet.
Nicole Maglich stepped up for the Buckeyes by winning four events. She won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:18.47, won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:04.84 and won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:07.54. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.
Also, performing well for the Buckeyes was Deanna Strunk, who also won two events for the Buckeyes, taking top honors in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.92 and the 400-yard Individual Medley in a time of 4:29.27. Katie Severson also swam the team’s top time for the year in the 50-yard freestlye, winning the event in a time of 24.80.
In addition, Stephanie Raezar won the 200-yard breaststroke, recording a time of 2:24.68, her best-ever time by four seconds.
In diving, Rachel Pichcaz came in fifth place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 211.25. Pichacz also came in fourth for the 3-meter dive with a score of 212.35.
ABOUT COACH FLECK
Coach Jeanne Fleck, enters her fourth season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s swimming program looking for her team to display excellence both in the water and classroom. She has become accustomed to both throughout her coaching career.
The Buckeyes also excelled in the classroom with an overall grade point average of 3.34 last season.
It was no coincidence that seven Buckeyes were named Academic All-Big Ten following the winter quarter and that 16 earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors. As a unit, the Ohio State women’s swimming program took home team Academic All-America honors awarded by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for the 2001-02 season. In three seasons, Fleck has engineered 25 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 41 OSU Scholar-Athlete honors. Fleck has geared the Buckeyes to one school record and two pool records.
ABOUT COACH PANZANO
Vince Panzano continues his legacy at Ohio State as he enters his 25th year as coach of the Buckeye men’s and women’s divers.
Panzano, who was named the 2002 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year (the seventh time he has earned the honor) has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. Diving champions, eight NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up and numerous Big Ten champions and NCAA All-Americans.
YOUNG BUCKS START OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
The 2002-2003 roster features a large freshmen class.
The Buckeyes have competed in 3 meets and the freshmen class has geared up to help the Buckeyes take home 3 wins.
Nicole Maglich competed in the 1000-yard freesyle against Ohio University placing in second with a top time of 10:17.57 and first place in the 500-yard freestyle where she holds the top time of 5:04.21. Maglich also had an outstanding performance againt West Virginia and Louisville in the dual meet on Saturday.
Deanna Strunk has aslo stepped in and provided the Buckeyes with speed.
Strunk placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with the team’s top time of 2:06.07 against Ohio.
She also brought alent and speed to the WV/Louisville meet where she reached the team’s top time of 4:29.88.
Diver Racheal Pichacz has also stepped up for the Buckeyes.
Pichacz placed third against Ohio in the 1-meter dive with a score of 221.48 and holds season’s best in the 3-meter dive (212.35).
UP NEXT
The Buckeyes return to action Satudary, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. when the team travels to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami Red Hawks. Both the men’s and women’s divers will compete at Miami on Saturday.
The Buckeyes will play host on Nov.15 vs. Utah at 5 p.m. The meet will be held at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. This meet will be coed. The team will then swim Miami (Ohio) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
