Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Indiana, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (14-10 overall, 8-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, down two games to one at home, rallied to defeat Indiana (18-9, 8-7) in a five-game (30-17, 28-30, 29-31, 30-17, 18-16) marathon match. The two-hour sixteen-minute match saw OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) score match-highs of 27 kills and 14 digs for the Buckeyes. Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) had 18 kills and a match-high eight total blocks (one solo, seven assists) and teammate Shelly Draeger added 16 kills and 10 digs. IU’s Melissa Brewer (Jr., Bloomington, Ind.) scored a team-high 21 kills with Christina Archibald (So., Belleville, Ill) adding 13, Katie Pollom (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) 12 and Nikki Hill (Jr., Muncie, Ind.) 10.
In game one, Ohio State broke a three-all tie with kills by Draeger and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden). The Buckeyes opened the lead to 12-6 before two OSU errors and two Pollom solo blocks cut the margin to 12-10. Kills by Gordon and Pollom made it 13-11. A Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) kill and one from Archibald made the score 14-12. A kill by Andersson and two ace serves by Higgins made it 17-12, OSU. Brewer countered with a kill (17-13) but two Andersson kills a block by Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Stiling and another Andersson kill gave OSU a 21-13 lead. Two OSU errors and two kills by Stiling made it 23-15. A Hill kill cut the lead to 23-16. A Gordon kill and a two blocks by Higgins and Draeger made it 26-16. Virtue scored on an ace but Archibald countered with a kill at 27-17. With a Higgins kill, an IU error and an ace serve by Gordon, Ohio State closed out the game at 30-17. The Buckeyes hit .536 for the game to .069 for Indiana. OSU had a 20-8 advantage in kills for the game. Game two began with an IU ace by Hill, a Buckeye error and a block by Pollom and Victoria Zimmerman (So., Barrington, Ill.) for a 3-0 lead. After a Buckeye kill by Higgins, the Hoosiers, with kills from Zimmerman and Brewer made the score, 5-1. An IU error and a Zimmerman kill made it 6-2. OSU made it 6-3 with a Draeger kill but kills by Archibald and Hill made it 8-3. An Andersson kill and an OSU error made it 9-4. Kills by Stiling and Virtue cut the margin to 9-6. A kill by Monique Pritz (Jr., Columbus, Ind.) and an IU error made it 10-7. Three OSU errors gave Indiana 13-7 lead. With kills from Gordon and Draeger and four Indiana errors, Ohio State tied the game at 13. Kills by Archibald and Higgins made it 14-all. A Brewer kill, a Buckeye error and a block by Zimmerman made it 17-14. Errors by both teams moved the score to 17-15. A Buckeye error and a Brewer kill made it 19-15. Kills by Draeger and Pritz made it 20-16. An IU error and a Hill kill made it 21-17. After an OSU error (22-17), three IU errors cut the lead to 22-20. Two OSU errors and a Pollom kill made it 25-20. A Gordon kill and a block by Gordon and Higgins moved the score to 25-22. Archibald and Draeger exchanged kill to make it 26-23. A kill by Brewer and an OSU error made it 28-23. OSU rallied with kills from Draeger, Gordon and Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) and with a Stiling-Miller block, trailed by one at 28-27. Brewer’s kill (29-27) set game point for IU. A Miller kill made it 29-28, but Brewer won the game at 30-28 with a kill to tie the match at one game each. Ohio State hit .211 to .116 for Indiana.
From an 11-all tie in game three, Ohio State went ahead, 13-11, on an IU error and a Draeger kill. The Buckeyes built a five-point lead at 27-22 before a Pollom kill and a Beth Heimann (Jr., Decatur, Ind.) ace cut the margin to 27-24. OSU’s Andersson made it four points with a kill at 28-24. Hill countered with a kill at 28-25. A Gordon kill set game point at 29-25. An Archibald kill and an OSU error made it 29-27 as OSU called time out. An Archibald block and a Brewer kill tied the game at 29. After stopping five Buckeye game points, Indiana with a block from Brewer and Zimmerman and an OSU error won the game, 31-29 and held a 2-1 lead in the match. OSU hit .095 for the game to .050 for Indiana.
After opening game four with a Gordon kill, Indiana scored five straight points with a kill from Zimmerman, a Buckeye error, a Brewer kill, an ace by Pollom and an Archibald kill for a 5-1 lead. Gordon stopped the run with a kill but two Brewer kills and an OSU error made it 8-2. A Draeger kill and an IU error made it 8-4. A kill from Archibald and a Hoosier error made it 9-5. Two IU errors and a Virtue kill closed the lead to 9-8. Kills by Hill and Stiling made it 10-9 and an IU error tied the game at 10. OSU took an 11-10 lead with a Gordon-Stiling block but a Pollom kill tied the game at 11. A Stiling kill and two IU errors made it 14-11, OSU. At 18-15, an Indiana error made it 19-15. A Brewer kill, a block by Hill and Pollom and an OSU error cut the lead to 19-18. Two Indiana errors and a Gordon kill made it 22-18 as Indiana called time out. A Hill kill made it 22-19. Two Stiling kills took the OSU lead to five points at 24-19. Kills by Hill and Archibald cut the lead to 24-21. A crucial point was then awarded to Ohio State on a call reversal by the officials to made it 25-21. Kills by Pollom and Gordon made it 26-22. Indiana cut the lead to 26-24 with kills by Brewer and Archibald. A Draeger kill and a Draeger-Stiling block made it 28-24 as Indiana called time out. A Brewer kill made it 28-25. Stiling’s kill set game point at 29-25. The Hoosiers, with kills by Brewer and Archibald, stopped two game points and trailed, 29-27. After an OSU time out, the Buckeyes captured the game with a Stiling kill at 30-27 to tie the match at two games each. Ohio State hit .389 for the game to .311 for Indiana.
Indiana opened game five with a kill by Hill (1-0). A Draeger kill tied the game at one. A Miller-Higgins block made it 2-1, OSU. A kill and ace serve by Pollom and a Brewer-Zimmerman block made it 4-2, Indiana. OSU tied the game at four with kills by Draeger and Stiling. A Buckeye errors and kills by Draeger and Stiling tied the game at six. A Hill kill and a Gordon kill tied the game at seven. Pollom and Gordon exchanged two kills each to tie the game at nine. An Archibald kill and a block by Zimmerman and Brewer gave Indiana at 11-9 lead as OSU called time out. Both teams recorded service errors to make it 12-10, IU. A Brewer kill made it a three-point IU lead at 13-10. Back-to-back kill from Stiling cut the Hoosier lead to 13-12 as IU called time out. An IU error tied the game at 13. The Hoosiers took a 14-13 lead with a Brewer-Pritz block and were serving match point one. Stiling’s kill tied the game at 14. Brewer countered with a kill to take a 15-14 lead and have match point two. A solo block by Stiling tied the game at 15. A Buckeye error set the third match point for IU at 16-15. A Hoosier error tied the game at 16 and another IU error gave OSU at 17-16 lead and serving match point. After an Indiana time out, Gordon’s 27th kill of the match ended the game at 18-16, Buckeyes for a 3-2 victory. OSU hit .333 for the game to .111 for Indiana.
For the match, Ohio State hit .292 to .141 for Indiana. The Buckeyes had an 81-66 advantage in kills. Each squad had four aces with IU’s Pollom and OSU’s Higgins sharing match-high honors with two each. The Buckeyes gave up 14 service errors to eight for Indiana. Ohio State had a 60-49 margin in digs with OSU’s Gordon collecting a match-high 14. IU’s Hillary Toivonen (Sr., Muncie, Ind.) recorded a team-high 13. The Buckeyes had a 15-14.5 advantage in blocks. OSU’s Stiling had a match-high eight blocks (1-7) with Higgins adding seven assists. IU’s Brewer recorded a team-high seven assists with Pollom adding six blocks (2-4). OSU’s Virtue had a match-high 67 assists in the match to 56 for Zimmerman.
OSU completes the home stand this Friday when they host No. 13 Penn State (20-5, 10-4) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
Ohio State Notes:
The Buckeyes are above .500 for the first time this season in Big Ten play at 8-7. OSU is now tied for fifth with Indiana. It marks the highest OSU has been in the standings this season. OSU started conference play at 0-5 and is 8-2 since.
OSU had season highs of 81 kill, 28 assist blocks and 15 total blocks against Indiana. The Buckeyes equaled the season-high of 74 assists.
With 27 kills tonight, Stacey Gordon now has 1,072 career kills and has moved to 14th on the OSU career-kills list. She passed Sherri Helman (1993-96) with 1,049. Gordon has recorded double-figure kills in her last 40 matches and in 52 of 55 matches in her career. She has 26 matches with 20 or more kills. Gordon, with 14 digs in the match, has 18 double-figure dig matches this season.
Katie Virtue recorded a season-high 67 assists against Indiana. Previously in four matches, she had recorded 64.
Stephanie Higgins had seven assist blocks against Indiana. This equals her career high for the fifth time.
Suzie Stiling’s 18 kills against Indiana ties her season-high for the third time. She also recorded a season-high seven assist blocks and a season high eight total blocks (1-7).
With seven assist blocks against Indiana, Suzie Stiling now has 360 career assist blocks and is now tied for third in the OSU career list with Sherri Helman (1993-96).
Suzie Stiling’s eight total blocks (1-7) in the match raises her career total to 421 (61-360) and moves her into third place, breaking her previous third place tie with Dana Stearns (1997-00) with 413 blocks (33-380). She needs three blocks to pass No. 2 Sherri Helman (1993-96) who has 423 (63-360).
