Michigan State Crowned 2002 Big Ten Tournament Champions – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The second-seeded Michigan State field hockey team (21-2-0, 5-1-0 Big Ten) defeated No. 1 Michigan (18-2-0, 6-0-0 Big Ten), 3-0, Sunday in the championship game of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament. The event was held at the North Turf Field and hosted by The Ohio State University.
MSU’s Annebet Beerman capitalized on a penalty corner 24:18 into the game, scoring the Spartans first goal and setting the pace of the game. Jenny Sanders and Julia Adams were credited with the assists. At the end of first half, Michigan led 10-7 in shots and 4-2 in penalty corners, but Michigan State led the scoreboard 1-0.
The Spartans took advantaged of their led scoring two more goals in the second half. Michelle Huynh-Ba scored assisted by Cynthia Martin at 41:05. Beerman scored her second goal of the game, 20th on the season, on another penalty corner from Sanders and Adams.
Michigan outshot Michigan State 14-11 in the game and also had a 9-4 advantage on penalty corners. The Spartans finished with their 21st victory of the season.
Michigan State goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy was credited with the win for the Spartans. She recorded five saves in 58:50. MSU goalkeeper Lauren Hess played the last 1:10 recording one save. Michigan’s Molly Maloney played all 70 minutes recording three saves.
Immediately following the game, an awards ceremony was held honoring the all-tournament team, most valuable players and the tournament champions. Brad Traviolia of the Big Ten Conference office named the winners and awarded the recipients.
