Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Northwestern, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (11-9 overall, 5-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team collected its third conference road win with a 3-2 (23-30, 32-30, 25-30, 30-27, 15-8) come-from-behind win at Northwestern Friday night. Buckeye Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) recorded a team-high 19 kills in OSU’s fifth win in their last six matches. Also scoring in double figures for Ohio State were Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) with 14 kills and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) with 11 each. Northwestern’s Erika Lange (Jr., Orland Park, Ill.) scored a match-high 24 kills for the Wildcats with Christie Gardner (Fr., West Bend, Wis.) and Iwona Lodzik (Jr., Tarnobrzeg, Poland) adding nine kills each.
With game one tied at four-all, a Lange kill and an OSU error gave Northwestern a 6-4 lead. A Gordon kill made it 6-5. The Wildcats scored the next seven points with a Cassie McKnight (Sr., San Marcos, Calif.) kill, four OSU errors and kills by Kelli Meyer (Sr., Madison, Wis.) and Sarah Ballog (Sr., Coto de Caza, Calif.) to take a 13-5 lead. The Buckeyes cut the Northwestern lead to three at 18-15 but the Wildcats won the game, 30-23. For the game, Northwestern hit .077 to .103 for Ohio State.
Northwestern opened game two with a 2-0 lead with kills from Lodzik and Gardner. The Wildcats held a four-point lead at 12-8 before a Gordon kill and two Northwestern errors cut the lead to one at 12-11. A Lodzik kill and an OSU error made it 14-11 Northwestern. Kills by Higgins and Gordon and a NU error tied the game at 14. The game saw the score tied 12 more ties, making it 30-all. A Stiling kill and a Wildcat error ended the game in favor of OSU at 32-30. The Buckeyes hit .189 for the game to .113 for the Wildcats. OSU’s Stiling collected six kill in 10 attempts in the game. The Wildcats held a 7-6 lead in game three before scoring five straight points with kills by Lodzik and Meyer, an ace serve by Lodzik and two OSU errors for a 12-6 lead. The Buckeyes would cut the lead to three at 17-14, 19-16 and 28-25 before a Lange kill and a solo block by Ballog ended the game at 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .235 in the game to .229 for the Wildcats.
Trailing two games to one, Ohio State broke a two-all tie with a Gordon kill, a Stiling ace serve and a NU error for a 5-2 lead. At 12-9, a Wildcat error and a block by Gordon and Higgins made it 14-9, OSU. Leading 17-12, kills by Meyer and Lodzik made it 17-14. An Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) kill took the lead to 18-14. Northwestern, with a Lange kill, a McKnight ace serve and two OSU errors tied the game at 18. OSU responded with kills by Miller and Gordon and two Wildcat errors to take a 22-18 lead. A kill by Gardner and a block by Drew Robertson (So., Long Beach, Calif.) and Lange cut the lead to 22-20. Kills by Stiling and Higgins made it 24-20. A Buckeye error cut the margin to 24-21. Kills by Gordon and Lodzik moved the score to 25-22. Northwestern closed to within one at 25-24 off two OSU errors. A Draeger kill and a Buckeye error made it 26-25. A Draeger kill and a block by Stiling and Draeger gave OSU a 28-25 lead. OSU reached game point with a Miller block at 29-25. An OSU error and a Lange kill stopped two game points before a Draeger kill ended the game at 30-27, tying the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .170 to .116 for Northwestern.
Ohio State opened game five with kills by Miller and Stiling and a NU error for a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats cut the margin to 3-2 with a Lange kill and an OSU error. A Stiling kill and a Wildcat error made it 5-2, OSU. A Lange block and a Gordon kill moved the score to 6-3. Northwestern, with a kill and ace serve by Lange and a block by Gardner tied the game at six. Following an Ohio State timeout, kills by Gordon and Miller and a NU error put Ohio State ahead, 9-6, as Northwestern called time out. Service errors by both teams and an ace serve by Higgins gave Ohio State an 11-7 lead as Northwestern called timeout. A Stiling-Draeger block and a Northwestern error opened a 13-7 Ohio State lead. A Meyer kill cut the lead to 13-8. A Northwestern service error set match point for the Buckeyes at 14-8. OSU closed out the match with a Stiling kill for a 15-8 game five win.
Ohio State hit .188 for the match to .112 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had a 64-60 advantage in kills while the Wildcats out served Ohio State, 10-5. Lodzik and McKnight had a match-high three aces each. OSU gave up 15 service errors to 13 for Northwestern. Ohio State had a 59-49 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon and Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) collecting a match-high 13 each with Draeger adding 10. NU’s Robertson and Lizzie Carlson (Fr., Palo Alto, Calif.) recorded a team-high 11. The Wildcats out blocked Ohio State, 14 to 12.5. NU’s Lange recorded a match-high seven blocks with two solos and five assists. OSU’s Draeger (0-6) and Stiling (1-5) had a team-high six blocks each. Ohio State setter Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) had a match-high 56 assists with NU’s Robertson recording 44.

Ohio State’s 3-2 win at Northwestern was the Buckeyes’ fifth victory in the last six matches after beginning Big Ten play 0-5.
This was OSU’s fifth five-game conference match. Ohio State has won at Northwestern and at Illinois, lost at Penn State, at Michigan State and fell at home to Minnesota.
Suzie Stiling equaled her season-high of six total blocks at Northwestern with a solo and five assists. She had six assist blocks earlier at Michigan State.
Amanda Miller recorded a career-high four total blocks at Northwestern on a solo and three assists. Her three assists is also a career-high.
Shelly Draeger had her best blocking match of her career as she recorded a career-high six total blocks with a career-high six assist blocks. Her previous career best was five assist blocks at Wright State in 2001.
Suzie Stiling’s 14 kills against Northwestern raises her career kills total to 1,242 and ties her for eighth on the OSU career kills list with Kristi Neuman (1983-86).
Suzie Stiling had six total blocks (1-5) against Northwestern. That moved her to fourth place on the OSU career total blocks list with 395 (58 solos, 337 assists). She moved out of a tie with Jenny Jackson (1992-95) at 389.
Stacey Gordon’s 19 kills against the Wildcats gives her 972 career kills and moves her to 17th on the OSU career kills list. She passed Jen Flynn (1997-99) with 968. Gordon needs nine kills to move to 16th passing Lisa Vitali (1986-89) with 978 and 16 kills to pass Julie Chellevold (1988-91) with 987 to move to 15th. Twenty-eight kills will give her 1,000 career kills.
Stacey Gordon’s 19 kills extends to 36 her streak of matches with consecutive double-figure kills. In her career, Gordon has had double-figure kills in 49 of 51 matches and has 22 matches with 20 or more kills. Defensively, she has 14 matches this season with double-figure digs and 33 in her career. Gordon has had 14 double-doubles (kills-digs) this season and 32 in her career.
Rebecca Kastein had 13 digs against the Wildcats and has had double-figure digs in her last four matches and five this season.
