The Ball State women, 4-3 on the season, are led by head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill who is in her 22nd season as the head coach of the Ball State University women’s swimming and diving team.
In 1999, Seibold-Caudill guided BSU to a fourth place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, including 16 individuals and five relay teams placing in the top 10.
Head coach Dorsey Tierney enters her fourth season at the helm of the Indiana Women’s Swimming Program. The Indiana women are 2-0-1 on the year.
Tierney was named 2001 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading her squad to a third-place finish at the conference championship, Indiana’s highest finish since 1981.
Women’s Head Coach Jeanne Fleck
Jeanne Fleck is in her third season as head coach with a 10-20 overall dual meet record in her first two-plus seasons. Before coming to Ohio State Fleck served as the head swimming coach at Northern Illinois for eight seasons and was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1999. Under Fleck, the Buckeyes doubled their win total last year and are looking for that same type of improvement this season. She also has produced 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections in her first two seasons at OSU.
Coach Fleck on Ball State/Indiana
“We are very excited about this weekend,” Fleck said. “It will be great to see how our team competes after not having any big meets since November. Amanda Treleven,Krissy Sendrowski, Katie Severson and Kristin Sander will are our go to girls with Steph Raezer in the distance events. Ball State should be a meet in which we can move girls around to off events and Indiana will be tough. They are the power house this year of the Big Ten.”
Diving Head Coach Vince Panzano
Now in his 24th year as head diving coach at Ohio State, Vince Panzano’s record speaks for itself. He has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. diving champions, eight NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up, 66 Big Ten champions and 76 All-Americans. Panzano also has been selected NCAA Diving Coach of the Year three times in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year six times.
A Look at the Buckeye Women
Johnson and Cicione are leading the way for the divers in 2001-02. Both have had strong showing in all of their outings this season. Cicione is shaking off an injury from a couple of weeks ago but should be fine for the meet against the Vikings.
Leading the swimmers are Amanda Treleaven and Kristin Sendrowski, who were both named most valuable swimmers a year ago and are carrying the load in their events once again this season. Treleaven has a season best.
The Buckeyes also are relying on Katie Severson, the top newcomer from a year ago. She serves as the top sprint freestyler. Severson has career bests in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyles with times of :23.76 and :51.53, respectively.
Co-captain Kristin Sander adds veteran leadership and experience to the 2001-02 team. She has season-best times in the 100 freestyle (54.13), 200 freestyle (1:55.13) and the 1000 freestyle (10:31.48).
“Kristin will provides great leadership for our team,” Fleck said. “She knows what it takes to score at Big Tens. This past summer she spent a lot of time training in Columbus and she should take charge of our middle distance group.”
Fleck added a large freshman class to the Ohio State swimming program. Her team includes 10 new faces- nine freshmen and one transfer.
Megan Hasselchwart (Fr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) is also proving to be a contender in the breaststroking events. She has season-best times in the 100 and 200 breastroke (1:11.30 and 2:35.61).
Sophomore sensation Stephanie Raezer has been very consistent this season. She has posted team bests this year in five different events: 500, 1000, and 1,650 freestyle, and in the 200 and 400 IM.
