COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s tennis team (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) pushed its all-time record against West Virginia (0-1, 0-0 Big East) to a perfect 11-0 with a 7-0 win at Jesse Owens West Recreational Center on Saturday. The Buckeyes-ranked No. 33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association-have won 20 of their last 24 home matches and are a perfect 3-0 on the season.
OSU was impressive at all of the singles positions. Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West), who is ranked No. 56 in the nation, saw her first action in the spring season. She did not play in OSU’s 7-0 wins against Dayton and Akron. The senior was impressive against WVU, defeating Anna Marie Underwood in straight sets at No. 1.
Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who like Rincon did not play last weekend, dropped Courtney Howell, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 to push her team-best record to 11-4. Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hill) won easily at No. 3 topping Maia Binder, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles the Buckeyes won all three matches by a combined score of 24-10. Rincon teamed with Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) to notch an 8-2 win against Underwood and Howell at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 Fisk and Pervez dropped Binder and Jenny Watkins, 8-3. Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) and Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) improved their doubles mark to 8-3 with an 8-5 win against Gretchen Unger and Emma Jeremiejczk.
Coach Chuck Merzbacher (Minnesota ’87) collected his 74th win as a Buckeye. He needs one more to become the fastest coach in Buckeye history to reach 75 career wins. In his sixth season at OSU, Merzbacher is a 74-56. For his career he is 207-119.
OSU begins its Big Ten season at 10 a.m. Sunday against Penn State. The Buckeyes play host to Virginia Tech at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 1. OSU then welcomes Marquette to Columbus for a 10 a.m. matchup Feb. 3. All three matches will be contested at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. Admission is free.
