%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team, 4-8 on the season, return home Saturday to take on Big Ten rival Illinois at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center at 2 p.m. The meet will feature a 16-event schedule.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes were 1-2 last weekend, scoring a victory at home against in-state rival Kenyon (119-86) on Friday before dropping two in a tri-meet with Michigan (148-94) and Michigan State (145-98) in East Lansing, Mich.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes were victorious in 10 of 11 events en route to their fourth victory of the season. Winners for the Buckeyes included the 200 medley relay team of Kylie Lancken (Fr., Sydney, Australia), Erika Staley (Jr., Piqua, Ohio/Piqua), Kristin Sendrowski (Sr., Garden City, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Katie Severson (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) with a time of 1:48.44, Kristin Sander (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy) in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:20.88, Lancken in the 200 freestyle (1:53.02) and 100 butterfly (:59.00) and Stephanie Raezer (So., Newark, Del./Glasgow) in the 400 IM (4:30.40) and 500 freestyle (5:05.42).%^$
%^$Other winners for the Buckeyes included Severson in the 100 freestyle with a time of :52.79, Amanda Treleaven (So., Colonial Light, Australia/Norwood) in the 100 backstroke (58.36), the 200 freestyle relay team of Sander, Katie Kolles (Fr., Edina, Minn./Edina), Ashley Barnes (Fr., Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) and Severson with a time of 1:37.55 and Staley with a season-best time of 1:06.15 in the 100 breaststroke. No diving took place at the meet.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes fell 148-94 to the Wolverines and 145-98 to the Spartans. Against the Spartans, the Buckeyes were victorious in four events. Sander took first in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:52.68. Staley took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.28 and the 400 freestyle relay team of Lancken, Treleaven, Lindsay Goodson (So., Sam Ramon, Calif./Carondelet) and Sander took first with a time of 3:34.10. Melanie Johnson (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights) took first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 299.40 against the Spartans.%^$
%^$OSU again took first place in four events against the Wolverines. Sander took first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.68 and Lancken took first in the 100 freestyle (:53.09).%^$
%^$Johnson and Jillian Cicione (Jr., Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas) went one-two in both diving events against Michigan. Johnson scored 253.60 in the 1-meter dive and 299.40 in the 3-meter dive. Cicione scored 232.95 in the 1-meter dive and 264.45 in the 3-meter.%^$
%^$Buckeyes Post Top Times
%^$Eight different Buckeyes posted team-best times against Ball State and Indiana. Severson set top times in the 50 (24.45) and 100 (52.55) freestyle while Sander posted top times in the 200 (1:52.97) and 500 (5:01.50) freestyle. In distance, Raezer posted a time of 17:02.03 in the 1,650 freestyle. Sendrowski set a season best with a time of 2:03.99 in the 200 butterfly and Staley in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.02). Messmer, Barnes, Routson and Raezer set a season-best in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.12. The 400 medley relay team of Treleaven, Staley, Sendrowski and Severson set a season-best time of 3:53.97. Staley set a season-best time of 1:06.15 in the 100 breaststroke against Kenyon.%^$
%^$Fleck Closing In On 100 Wins
%^$Jeanne Fleck is just two wins shy from her 100th career victory. She is in her third season as head coach with a 13-23 overall dual meet record in her two plus seasons in Columbus. Before coming to Ohio State Fleck served as the head swimming coach at Northern Illinois for eight seasons and was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1999. Under Fleck, the Buckeyes doubled their win total last year and are striving for that same type of improvement this season. She also has produced 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections in her first two seasons at OSU.%^$
%^$”Illinois will be tough,” Fleck said. “Hopefully we can pull this one out at home for our first Big Ten win. If we keep improving the way we have each weekend we should be fine.”%^$
%^$Diving Head Coach Vince Panzano
%^$Now in his 24th year as head diving coach at Ohio State, Vince Panzano’s record speaks for itself. He has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. diving champions, eight NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up, 66 Big Ten champions and 76 All-Americans. Panzano also has been selected NCAA Diving Coach of the Year three times in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year six times.%^$
%^$A Look at the Buckeyes
%^$Johnson and Cicione are leading the way for the divers in 2001-02. Both have consistently place in the top five of their events in 2001-02 . Johnson and Cicione went one-two in both diving events against Michigan last weekend. Johnson scored 253.60 in the 1-meter dive and 299.40 in the 3-meter dive. Cicione scored 232.95 in the 1-meter dive and 264.45 in the 3-meter.%^$
%^$Leading the swimmers are Treleaven and Sendrowski who were both named most valuable swimmers a year ago. Treleaven placed first in the 100 backstroke against Ball State with a time of 58.90. Sendrowski has consistently posted top times in the butterfly events.%^$
%^$Raezer has also come on strong for the Buckeyes in 2002. She has posted team-best times in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. Staley has also been strong of late, posting a season-best times in the breaststroking events.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes also are relying on Severson, the top newcomer from a year ago. Severson has team bests this year in the 50 (24.45) and 100 freestyle (52.55) and the 100 butterfly (57.53).%^$Co-captain Sander adds veteran leadership and experience to the 2001-02 team. She has posted top times in the 200 (1:52.97) and 500 (5:01.50) freestyle events this season for the Buckeyes.%^$
%^$A Look At Illinois
%^$Illinois is 3-3 on the season with wins coming against Northern Illinois, Illinois State and Truman State. Losses have come at the hands of Iowa, Notre Dame and UCLA.%^$
%^$Head coach Sue Novitsky is in her second season at the helm of the Illini after finishing 4-7 in 2000-01. She led three swimmers to the NCAA Championships in her inaugural season as head coach.%^$
%^$Leading the way for the swimmers is senior Jessica Aveyard. Aveyard is a two-time All-America selection in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Ilkay Dikmen is very strong in the breaststroking and IM. Dikmen a 2000 Olympian, competed for Turkey in the 200 breaststroke.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes wrap up the regular season at home next Friday, Feb. 1 against Louisville at 5 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
