COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s tennis team began its spring season with convincing wins against instate rivals Dayton and Akron. The Buckeyes-ranked No. 33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association-topped the Flyers, 7-0, in the school’s first-ever meeting and improved to 4-0 all-time against the Zips of Akron with a 7-0 win.
OSU (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) has won 20 of its last 23 home matches and an assortment of new Buckeyes had their hand in the victory. Freshmen Lindsay Bryan (Fr., New Orleans, La./Ursuline Academy) and Lindsey Adams (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) each went 2-0 and transfer Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) won both of her matches.
Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West), back for the Buckeyes after taking a medical redshirt last season, posted wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. At No. 1 she stopped Akron’s Irena Strembitsky, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 after dropping Rebecca Stanchin, 6-2, 6-1, earlier in the day at No. 2. Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Grove) played strong throughout the day never allowing an opponent to win more than two sets.
In doubles the Buckeyes won all six matches by a combined score of 48-9. Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren N.J./Watchung Hill) teamed with Colville to notch two wins at the No. 1 position and improved their team-best doubles record to 7-2. Williams and Matko improved to 7-3 on the year with wins at the No. 2 spot and Adams and Claudia Castro (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas (Wis.)) won their matches, 8-1, 8-2, at No. 3.
Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West), ranks a career-best No. 56, and Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who was 10-4 in the fall, did not compete against Dayton and Akron.
The Buckeyes return to action next weekend when they play host to West Virginia at noon Saturday. OSU opens Big Ten play at 10 a.m. Sunday against Penn State. Both matches will be contested at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. Admission is free.
