COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State women’s tennis team continued fall tournament play Saturday at the fifth annual Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The Buckeyes advanced one player to the singles semifinal and a doubles team to the finals.
This is the first tournament of the fall season for OSU. They were scheduled to play in the Cornell Invitational, Sept. 14-16, but did not compete because the event was canceled because of the terrorist attacks the Tuesday before.
Three players advanced to the third round of the singles draw Friday, but only one – Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) – managed to advance to the semifinals. The righthander beat the No. 4 seed Alice Pirsu in a three-set thriller, 7-6, 4-6, 6-0. In the quarterfinals she dropped seeded player Jeanette Cluskey of Richmond, 6-4, 6-2. Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West) and Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren N.J./Watchung Hills) also moved into the quarterfinals. Krishnamurthy of Princeton, 6-3, 6-4, but fell to the No. 5 seed Lara Van Rooyen of Old Dominion, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
The Buckeyes played extremely well in doubles. The duo of Pervez and Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) made it to the quarterfinals before falling to the No. 1 seed Nataly Cahana and Ana Radeljevic. The tandem of Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) and Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Grove) Penn’s Nikki Ptak and Rachel Shweky, 8-4, to set up a showdown with teammates Rincon and Fisk.
