Softball Wins Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$AKRON, Ohio–The Ohio State softball team defeated Kent State, 4-0, in the championship game of the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic in Akron, Ohio. The Buckeyes finished the tourney undefeated at 5-0, outscoring opponents 28-1.%^$
%^$Katie Chain (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) picked up her third shutout of the classic, striking out 13, including seven of the first eight batters she faced. For the tournament, she totaled 29 strikeouts and allowed just five hits in 19 innings of work, earning her MVP pitcher honors.%^$
%^$Wendy Allen (So., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) earned offensive MVP honors. Other Buckeyes chosen to the all-tournament team were Stacy Roth (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon), Chrissy Fowler (Sr., Utica, Ohio/Utica), Kristine Himes (Jr., Bolivar, Ohio/Tusky Valley)and AnnaSmith (Sr.,Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar).%^$
%^$”Katie obviously pitched well all weekend,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “Our hitters came through when we needed it. For only practicing for a week, our team performed at a high level.”%^$
%^$The Buckeyes jumped out to an early 1-0 under the lights at Firestone Stadium. Smith hit a single up the middle with one out in the top of the first inning. Roth followed with a double down the left field line to plate Smith.%^$
%^$Fowler put the Buckeyes up 3-0 with a two-run homerun over the fence in left field with one outin the sixth inning. Roth had singled to open the inning.%^$
%^$OSU used three-consecutive singles to extend its lead to 4-0 in the top of the final stanza. Smith followed with a high chopper to third base and Roth belted a line drive up the middle to bring in the final run of the game.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes will travel to Athens,Ohio, Oct. 13 to face the Ohio Bobcats.
