Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Preview – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s golf team combined to fire a 2-under par 282 to finish in the No. 4 spot of the 2001 Ping/Golfweek Preview at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course Sunday.%^$
%^$Clemson won the tournament championship by one stroke over Wake Forest. Clemson’s D.J. Trahan, playing in the final group of the day, birdied No. 18 to give the Tigers the victory.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes started the day in the No. 8 position behind some of the nation’s best teams. Ohio State had a pair of individuals shoot sub-par rounds, including a career-best round of 67 turned in by senior Doug Wade (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central) and a 1-under 70 by junior Justin Collins (Ironton, Ohio/Ironton). It was the second-consecutive round under par for Collins.%^$
%^$Wade’s final day effort placed him tied for second (70-71-70=211) among all individuals in the event, which pitted the top teams from the 2001 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship tournament. Ohio State will host the 2002 NCAA event May 27-June 1 on the Scarlet Course.%^$
%^$Texas’ John Klauk, a senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., set an Ohio State Scarlet Course record Sunday with a 65. The Scarlet Course is a par 71 from the championship tees.%^$
%^$Brent Wanner of Wake Forest was the tournament medallist with a three-round score of 210 (69-70-71=210).%^$
%^$Ohio State, which missed the 2001 NCAA Tournament by one stroke, finished the 2001 Ping /Golfweek Preview ahead of Florida, the defending national champions, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Arizona State, Augusta State, Virginia Tech and East Tennessee State. All these teams were among the Top 10 teams at the NCAA Tournament last year.%^$
%^$Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach, said his team’s performance is a building block for the remainder of the season.%^$
%^$”That was a great finish for us after the start we had in the opening round,” Brown said. “I was proud of the guys and the way they fought back. We faced some great competition from some of the best team’s in the country.%^$
%^$”It was a really good start for our team this year,” Brown said. “We will face most of these teams in a couple weeks at the Red River Classic in Dallas. This event showed we could have a pretty decent golf team this year.”%^$
%^$The Buckeyes will next compete at the Red River Classic Oct. 8-9 in Dallas, Texas.%^$
