The Ohio State field hockey team (2-0) topped visiting Southwest Missouri State (1-3), 1-0, at the North Turf Field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Lucy Clayton (Fr., Scarborough,England/Scarborough College) scored off a penalty corner with assists by Kimberley Reedy (Sr., Scarborough, Ontario/Agincourt Collegiate) and Lorena Margni (Fr., Montevideo, Uraguay/British Schools) to give the Buckeyes the victory.
Both teams came out ready for a defensive struggle in the first half. The Buckeyes took four shots in the half, while the Bears only got one attempt. OSU also attempted three penalty corners to SMS’s zero.
Ohio State broke the scoreless tie on Clayton’s goal with 20:39 remaining in regulation. The second half was much more offensive with OSU attempting four shots and five corners. SMS got one corner attempt. Because of the tight defense in front of her, Allison Blanton (Sr., Newton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) finished the game with zero saves. SMS keeper Jessie Lininger finished the game with two saves, both coming in the second half.
“It is great to move to 2-0 on the season,” Jose Ignacio Puzo, OSU assistant coach, said. “Southwest Missouri State played very well and gave us a hard battle at times. We are happy with today’s result, but we still have a lot of work to do before conference play starts.”
The Buckeyes will be back in action Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to play Drexel and Pennsylavania.
