COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State women’s tennis team began fall tournament play Friday at the fifth annual Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Six of the eight Buckeyes that competed in the singles draw advanced to the second round.
This was the first tournament of the fall season for OSU. They were scheduled to play in the Cornell Invitational, Sept. 14-16, but did not compete because the event was canceled because of the terrorist attacks the Tuesday before.
OSU was well represented in the seedings at the Cissie Leary as three of the 16 seeds were Buckeyes. Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West) garnered the No. 3 seed and received a first round bye. In her second round match she dropped Akane Kokubo of Cornell, 6-0, 6-1. Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren N.J./Watchung Hills) were also seeded, but did not receive first-round byes. Instead both battled their way into the third round. Fisk beat Cornell’s Daniela DelPrete and Temple’s Lara Ercegvic to advance and Pervez shut down Kylie Lassalle of Seton Hall and Stephanie White of Yale to land a spot in the third round.
Two Buckeye newcomers – Lindsay Bryan (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan)- won their first matches in scarlet and gray. Bryan bested Nicole Cercone of Seton Hall and Colville dispatched Columbia’s Lenna Krisnasawamy. Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) returned to the court triumphant after taking a medical redshirt last year. She beat Victoria Beck of Brown.
In doubles play the tandem of Rincon and Fisk was awarded the No. 2 seed and received a first round bye. Three other Buckeyes double squads advanced past the first round. The Cissie Leary Invitational continues Saturday before concluding with the finals Sunday.
