Women’s Tennis Announces Team Awards – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team held its annual awards banquet to celebrate its outstanding season June 3 at the Ohio State Golf Course. The squad, under head coach Chuck Merzbacher, went 17-11 and finished third in the Big Ten, tying the program record for highest conference finish. The Buckeyes had the team, a singles player and a doubles tandem qualify for the NCAA Championships for the third-consecutive season. Senior Kristy Dascoli (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Academy) and doubles partner Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich./West) became the first All-America honorees in program history at the conclusion of the season.
For the fourth-consecutive season, Dascoli was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. She ended her outstanding collegiate career by garnering Big Ten Player of the Year accolades for the second-consecutive season and her fourth All-Big Ten honor. In the NCAA Singles Championship, Dascoli reached the quarterfinals to become the first All-America in program history and she and Rincon earned doubles All-America accolades with a berth in the NCAA doubles quarterfinals. Dascoli ended the season ranked 20th (tied) in singles and No. 40 in doubles. She is Ohio State’s all-time singles wins leader (104), ranks third all-time in doubles wins with 93 and set the program single-season record with 31 singles wins this year.
Senior Laura Maloney (Barrington, Ill.), an ITA Scholar-Athlete All-American, received the Coaches’ Award, while Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) was named the Most Improved Player. Maloney went 14-17 in singles this year. She teamed with Pervez at No. 2 doubles, where the tandem posted a mark of 18-9. In singles, Pervez was 24-15, giving her 51 singles wins in just two years on the squad.
