Men’s 4×400 Relay and Ian Connor Qualify For Finals In Day Two Of NCAA Track Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–The second day of competition at the NCAA Track and Field Championships included the men’s 4×400-meter relay team and Ian Connor (Sr., Lexington, Ohio) in the 3,000 steeplechase advancing to event finals, while Donica Merriman (Sr., Trotwood, Ohio) qualified for the semifinals in the 100 hurdles at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field Thursday.
Connor, who earned his first All-America title with a second-place finish in the event last year, challenged the pack with 600 meters to go in his preliminary heat to pull off a fifth-place finish (8:47.96)and qualify for the finals Saturday. The 4×400 relay team of Courtney Cornwall (Sr., Inwood, N.Y.), Joel Brown (So., Baltimore, Md.), Thomas Dickson (St. Vincent, West Indies), and Andrew Pierce (Sr., Yellow Springs, Ohio) was able to qualify for the finals after the anchor leg ran by Pierce (44.4) paced the Buckeyes to a fourth-place finish in their preliminary heat with a season-best time 3:05.02. Pierce failed to qualify for the final in the men’s 400, placing third in his prelim heat with the 10th -fastest time overall (46.18).
In other preliminary action, Merriman took control over the sixth hurdle to win her 100 hurdle heat (13.09) and qualify for the semifinals tonight. Onica Frasier (So., Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Tina Johnson (Sr., Burlington, N.J.) finished fourth (54.75) and fifth (55.94), respectively, in the 400 and will not advance to finals.
Action begins today at 6 p.m. EDT when Merriman competes in the 100-meter hurdles semifinals.
