Women’s Tennis Turns Back Michigan – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State women’s tennis team received all it could handle from rival Michigan in a Saturday afternoon match. The spring weather was perfect, but OSU (14-5, 5-0 Big Ten) needed to rely on the doubles point to put them over the top and claim a 4-3 win over the Wolverines (7-7, 1-4 Big Ten). The Buckeyes have now won five in a row and 10 of their last 12 matches.%^$
The Buckeyes won three singles matches-all in straight sets. At No. 1 Kristy Dascoli (Sr., Bradenton, Fla.), thumped Ohio product Kavitha Tipirneni 6-1, 6-3.The energetic Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J.) won easily at the No. 3 spot by dropping Szandra Fuzesi 6-3, 6-4. OSU’s final singles win came at the No. 6 spot where Lindsay Williams (Fr., Beverly Hills, Mich.) breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jennifer Duprez.%^$
The most exciting match of the day was at No. 2 singles. Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich.) battled Christine Nolan in a three-set thriller. Rincon lost the first set and then fought back to win the second. In the end Nolan prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the match worthy of being called an instant classic.%^$
The Buckeyes won two of the three doubles matches to win the point. At No. 1 Dascoli and Rincon won 9-8 (5) over Kimberly Plaushines and Fuzesi. The duo of Pervez and Laura Maloney (Sr., Barrington, Ill.) picked up their fourteenth victory by defeating Jennifer Vaughn and Duprez.%^$
The Buckeyes, who have won 12 regular-season Big Ten matches in a row, face Michigan State tomorrow at 10 a.m. The match will be contested at the Stickney Tennis Center weather permitting.%^$
