Buckeyes Fare Well In Distance and Field Events At Bearcat Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Buckeyes won eight individual events at the Bearcat Classic while other members of the team were completing a strong performance at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., after winning two college championships.
The women throwers dominated their competition, winning three out of five individual events. Katy Craig (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio) earned first-place finishes in the hammer (56.48 meters) and discus (48.46m). Her discuss mark is a NCAA provisional qualifier and also a season best. After finishing eighth in the shot put championship at the Penn Relays Thursday, Alexis McCall (Fr., Elyria, Ohio) tossed a season-best NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15.49m to earn first place at the Classic.
On the men’s side, distance runners owned the track winning three events, while the throwers claimed two top spots. J. J. O’Rielly (Jr., Dover, Ohio) claimed victory with a season-best time of 3:54.35 in the 1,500-meter run, Sjaan Gerth (Fr., Belgrave, Ontario) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:22.04) and John White (So., Sylvania, Ohio) earned a commanding victory in the 5,000-meter run (14:50.32).
Thrower Dan Taylor’s (Fr., Middlefield, Ohio) season-best NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 18.31m and John Ferguson’s (So., Powell, Ohio) throw of 58.85m gave them first-place finishes in the shot put and javelin, respectively.
The Buckeyes host the 16th annual Jesse Owens Track Classic Sunday, May 6 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The classic serves as a tribute to one of the most famous, beloved and respected athletes in Ohio State athletics. Events are set to begin at 9 a.m. with 21 teams scheduled to compete.
