Top Seeds Advance at Big Ten Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The top two seeds in the 2001 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championship, No. 1 Northwestern and No. 2 Illinois, won their quarterfinal matches today at the Stickney Tennis Center to advance to the semifinals. The Wildcats posted a 4-1 win over No. 9 Purdue, while the Fighting Illini shutout No. 7 Wisconsin, 5-0.
Northwestern will face the winner of the Ohio State/Iowa match in the semifinals and Illinois will go up against the Penn State/Indiana winner. The semifinals will be played at noon Saturday at the Stickney Tennis Center.
In doubles, Northwestern posted victories at the top two spots to earn the doubles point. Colleen Cheng and Marine Piriou defeated Melissa Woods and Missy Wright of Purdue, 8-5, at No. 1. The Wildcats’ Jessica Rush and Lia Jackson topped Lynsey Fick and Melissa Iqbal, 8-2, at No. 2.
Northwestern then received singles wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 for the victory. At No. 2, Lia Jackson posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Boilermakers’ Melissa Iqbal. Marine Piriou defeated Melissa Woods in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4 and at No. 6 Jessica Rush topped Lynsey Fick, 6-2, 6-3. Jackson’s win clinched the victory for the Wildcats.
Illinois claimed the doubles point against Wisconsin. The Illini’s Carla Rosenberg and Eva Choe topped Vanessa Rauh and Katie Daugherty posted an 8-1 win at No. 2. The other two doubles matches remained close, until Illinois’ Jenny McGaffigan and Eldina Fazlic pulled out a 9-7 win over the Badgers’ Teresa Gonzaga and Linde Mues at No. 3. The No. 1 match was abandoned with the score tied at seven.
The Fighting Illini won four singles matches to advance to the semifinals. Fazlic won at No. 2 over Rauh (6-4, 6-1), Simone Kung defeated Dougherty at No. 3 (6-3, 6-1) and Rosenberg beat Teresa Gonzaga, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6. At No. 1, McGaffigan recorded a three-set victory over April Gabler (6-0, 4-6, 6-1) to clinch the victory for Illinois.
The quarterfinal matches continue at 2 p.m. Friday with No. 4 Ohio State facing No. 5 Iowa and No. 3 Indiana going up against No. 6 Penn State.
