Softball Wins Record-Tying 40th Game – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (40-14 overall, 11-4 in the Big Ten) defeated Wisconsin, 8-2, in game one of a doublheader at Goodman Diamond in Madison,Wisc., to tie the 1994 edition of the Buckeyes with the school record for most wins in a season with 40.%^$
%^$OSU received a solid outing in the pitching circle from Katie Chain (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover). Chain went the distance, striking out two, scattering eight hits and allowing one earned run. Jennifer Cummings took the loss for the Badgers, allowing just one earned run. She falls to 10-11 for the season.%^$
%^$Wisconsin out-hit OSU, 8-7, but the Buckeyes were aided by seven Badger errors.%^$
%^$Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) and Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) accounted for five of OSU’s seven hits. Link went 3-for-4 with one run batted in and Allen went 2-for-3 with two RBI.%^$
%^$OSU opened the game with three consecutive singles to left field to race out to an early lead. After Link and Allen singled to left field, Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) did the same, scoring Link from second base. Kristine Himes (Jr., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) followed suit with one out, singling to left field to move the runners up and load the bases. A fielding error by second baseman Kerry Hageon on a Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) allowed both Allen and Roth to score.%^$
%^$Three Badger errors in the top of the second led to another OSU run. Roth struck out with two outs but reached first when catcher Nicki Starry’s throw to first after a passed ball sailed into right field. Allen, who had reached first on a fielder’s choice, moved to third base on the overthrow and scored when rightfielder Teresa Mendez’s throw home hit the netting behind home plate.%^$
%^$Two hits and an error led to a Badger run in the bottom half of the third inning. OSU answered with a run in the top of the fourth and then three more scores in the fifth inning.%^$
%^$After retiring the first two batters in the fifth, Cummings walked Rogeanna Hottinger (So., Newark, Ohio/Newark). Breana Pozzi (Fr., Petaluma, Calif./Petaluma) reached on an error at second base. Link singled to score Hottinger and Pozzi after a double-steal put them onn second and third base, respectively. Link advanced to second on the throw home and moved to third on a wild pitch. She was brought home on a single to left center field by Allen.%^$
%^$Wisconsin added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but never threatened to rally.
