%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 seed Wisconsin and No. 9 seed Purdue advanced in the 2001 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championships with first-round wins at the Stickney Tennis Center today. The Badgers topped No. 10 Michigan, 4-2, and the Boilermakers posted a 4-1 victory over No. 8 Minnesota.%^$
%^$Wisconsin will face No. 2 Illinois in the quarterfinals, while Purdue moves on to play No. 1 Northwestern. Both matches will be played at 10 a.m. Friday at the Stickney Tennis Center.%^$
%^$After Michigan and Wisconsin split the first two doubles matches, Linde Mues and Teresa Gonzaga posted an 8-4 victory over Jennifer Duprez and Szandra Fuzesi at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Badgers.%^$
%^$In singles, Wisconsin posted three victories for the win. At No. 6, Teresa Gonzaga defeated Duprez in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) and Mues posted a win over Jen Vaughn (7-6, 6-2). At No. 1, April Gabler rebounded from losing the first set to defeat Kavitha Tipirneni, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and clinch the match for Wisconsin.%^$
%^$For the Wolverines, Chrissie Nolan won at No. 2 over Vanessa Rauh and Joanne Musgrove defeated Lara Vojnov at No. 5.%^$
%^$Purdue began its match against Minnesota by claiming the doubles point with victories by Melissa Woods and Elizabeth Wright over Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova at No. 1 and Erika Quebe and Gretchen Haynor over Brandi Watts and Andrea Rose at No. 2.%^$
%^$In singles, Purdue got wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 6 for the victory. The Boilermakers’ Quebe defeated Vladea, 6-2, 6-4, and Haynor topped Havelkova, 6-2, 6-4. Lynsey Fick clinched the victory for Purdue with a straight-set victory over Rose at No. 6, 7-6, 6-4.%^$
