Penn State advances to Quarterfinals of Big Ten Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 6-seed Penn State posted a 4-0 victory over No. 11 Michigan State in the first round of the 2001 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championships at the Stickney Tennis Center today. The Nittany Lions will face No. 3 Indiana in the quarterfinals Friday. Purdue and Wisconsin also advanced to the quarterfinals with wins earlier Thursday.
Penn State swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
The Nittany Lions won three singles matches for the victory. At No. 5 singles, Penn State’s Kristen Nowicki posted a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Christee Chargot, while at No. 6, the Nittany Lions’ Leigh Ann Merryman topped Josie Schumda, 6-2, 6-0. Judy Wang clinched the win for the Nittany Lions with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Michigan State’s Trine Lise Juluissen at No. 3. The other three singles matches were abandoned.
The Big Ten Championships continue Friday with the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Stickney Tennis Center. No. 1 seed Northwestern faces No. 9 Purdue and No. 2 Illinois battles No. 7 Wisconsin in the morning matches. In the afternoon, No. 4 seed and host Ohio State goes up against No. 5 Iowa and No. 3 Indiana faces No. 6 Penn State.
The teams advancing to the semifinals play at noon Saturday with the final match to be played at noon Sunday.
