Track and Field Fares Well at Pacesetter Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio— The outdoor track team took care of business during the Pacesetter Invitational, April 20-21 in Terre Haute, Ind., at Indiana State’s Marks Field. The men dominated the competition, winning the meet with a total of 235.5 points. Indiana State scored 172 points to claim second. No other men’s team approached 120 points for the meet.
The men’s events featured seven season bests, including Andrew Pierce’s (Sr., Yellow Springs, Ohio) NCAA provisional qualifying 200-meter time of 20.70 seconds, 0.60 seconds faster than his previous best. Pierce also posted a provisional qualifying time in the 400-meter, placing first with a time of 45.97. Joel Brown (So., Baltimore, Md.) also shattered his previous best on 110-meter high hurdles. The sophomore recorded a time of 14.19 seconds in the event to take second behind Indiana State’s All-America Aubrey Henning. Brown’s previous mark was 14.47 seconds at the Wheeling Jesuit Invititational. The 4×400-meter relay team managed to shave almost five full seconds off its previous high, recording a time of 3:10.06 in the event to take first. Also setting season highs were Brad Hart (Fr. Centerburg, Ohio) on high jump (2.08 meters), Rob Aldredge (Jr., Vandalia, Ohio) on pole vault (4.40 meters) and both Jeff Matcha and Dan Taylor (Fr., Middlefield, Ohio) on discus with marks of 52.54 meters and 51.70 meters respectively. Buckeyes won nine of the 21 events and finished second in another five. Rob Myers (So., Rushville, Ohio) and Ian Conner (Sr., Lexington, Ohio) swept the Top 2 spots in the 800-meter run with times of 1:54.50 and 1:55.41, respectively.
The women ended the competition with 186 points, only nine behind first place Indiana State. Donica Merriman (Sr., Trotwood, Ohio), competing in the 100-meter dash for the first time this outdoor season, raced to a provisional qualifying time of 11.55 to claim first place. Teammate Onica Fraser (So., Brooklyn, N.Y.) took first in both the 200 and the 400-meter dash, with Tina Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Ohio) placing fourth and second in the two events.
Katy Craig (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio) continued to shine, winning the discus and the hammer throw events with ease. Craig set personal season highs in both, posting marks of 45.96 meters in discus and 58.86 meters in hammer throw. Also setting a personal season high was Alexis McCall (Fr., Elyria, Ohio). The freshman won the shot put competition with a toss of 14.74 meters. Molly Logan (So., Darby, Pa.) took first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.71) and placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (14:47) behind Brandi Hogan’s (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) time of 14.17.
The Pacesetter Invititional was the first scored event of the season for both teams. Next up, the Buckeyes travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to participate in the Penn Relays April 25-28.
