COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State softball team (35-12 overall, 9-3 in the Big Ten) defeated Michigan State, 6-1, in game two of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field to give the Buckeyes their third-consecutive sweep of a conference opponent. Last weekend, OSU took two from both Indiana and Purdue.
Kristi DeVries (fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) allowed just three hits and struck out four in the complete-game win. She improves to 13-5 with the win. Keri DeJong allowed six Buckeye hits and struck out six in the loss. She falls to 4-7 for the season.
“Kristi did a nice job of working the changeup and mixing it up,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “We he had some big hits. Stacy (Roth’s) home run and Chrissy Fowler’s two-RBI triple were huge.”
Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) cracked her fourth home run of the season – a two run shot down the left field line in the top of third – to put OSU up 2-0. Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) was on first after coaxing a walk. Roth went 3-for-3 from the plate with three runs batted in.
The Buckeyes extended their lead to 6-0 with a four-run fifth inning. Roth singled to left field to score Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora), who walked to open the inning. A sacrifice fly to centerfield by Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarwas Valley) scored Smith from third. With two outs, Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) hit a line drive-triple to the gap in left center to score Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley, from second and Smith from third.
The Buckeyes play host to Big Ten leader Michigan (12-0 Big Ten) tomorrow at 2 p.m.
