COLUMBUS, Ohio– On a crisp, soggy Sunday morning, the Ohio State women’s tennis team went indoors to the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center to bust out of a two-match losing streak. The Buckeyes (16-7, 7-1 Big Ten) dropped the Purdue Boilermakers (4-14, 1-7 Big Ten), 5-2, in a marathon of a match that lasted a little over five hours.
Sunday also was Senior Day for two Buckeyes. Kristy Dascoli (Bradenton, Fla.) and Laura Maloney (Barrington, Ill.) played their last regular-season home matches today and both of them went out victorious in the last home match of the year. They were both honored before the match by coach Chuck Merzbacher who presented them with flowers. Dascoli, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, dominated Erika Quebe en route to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. She is now two wins shy of becoming the first female tennis player to reach the century mark. Maloney followed suit as she downed Lisa Walgenbach 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5.
In other singles action Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J.) and Lindsay Williams (Fr., Beverly Hills, Mich) both claimed victories adding another tally to their own personal winning streaks. Pervez went to 7-0 in the Big Ten with a 6-3, 2-6 (10-5) win over Gretchen Haynor at No. 3. She has won eight consecutive matches. Williams won her sixth match in a row and improved to 6-0 in the Big Ten by beating Lynsey Fick, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6.
The Buckeyes won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At No. 1 Dascoli and Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich.) dropped Melissa Woods and Missy Wright, 8-2. Pervez and Maloney picked up their team-best 16th dual-match victory by dropping Melissa Iqbal and Fick at No. 2. The Buckeyes travel to No. 36 Illinois April 21 for a noon matchup and then one day later battle No. 10 Northwestern on the road at noon. OSU then hosts the Big Ten Tournament April 26-29.
