COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (32-12 overall, 6-3 Big Ten) continued a successful pattern it has developed over the weekend in the Hoosier state with a 2-0 win over Purdue (27-17-1 overall, 4-7 Big Ten)at Varsity Softball Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
The win marked the third consecutive game the Buckeyes have scored late to win 2-0 after they won both ends of a twin bill with Indiana by the same score in Bloomington, Ind. Friday.
Kristi DeVries also followed suit in the pitching circle for OSU, allowing just two hits and striking out six 6.1 innings of work. In Bloomington, Katie Chain (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) allowed just three hits in the first win over IU and Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) gave up just two hits in the second win over the Hoosiers.
“I had to keep them off balance,” DeVries said. “I had a few pitches working for me today. It feels great to have that kind of success against a quality team like Purdue.”
DeVries improves to 12-5 with the win. OSU tallied six hits off Purdue starter Leighann Burke, who fell to 10-8 with the loss.
DeVries also backed herself at the plate. With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, DeVries led off the inning with a double to left center field. After moving to third on a ground ball by Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hillard Davidson) DeVries scored on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica).
OSU added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) singled to center to open the inning. She swiped second and went to third when shortstop Katie Crabtree could not hold on to the throw. Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) brought in Smith with a line drive double to the wall in left center field. After giving up her second hit of the afternoon to Boilermaker first baseman Heidi Foster -who went 2-for-3 and was the only Purdue player to get a hit off DeVries – and then getting the first out of the inning with a flyout from leftfielder Andrea Roush, Allen came in to relieve DeVries and retired the next two batters.
OSU and Purdue will play the second game of the series Easter Sunday at 1 p.m. (central).
