Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 25 Kentucky – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– After picking up two conference wins over the weekend the Ohio State women’s tennis team stepped out of Big Ten play and welcomed No. 25 Kentucky to Columbus Wednesday afternoon. In an epic match between two Top 30 squads the Wildcats squeaked by OSU, 4-3, at the Stickney Tennis Center. The loss snaps OSU’s (15-6, 6-0 Big Ten) season-high, six-match winning streak and is the Buckeyes second home loss of the year. With the win UK lifts its record to 12-8.
The match started with the Wildcats claiming victories in all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At No. 1 Kristy Dascoli (Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) and Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich.) staged a late rally but were unable to upset the 19th-ranked duo of Brooke Skeen and Lauren Rookledge. The UK tandem won 8-6. At No. 2 Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J.) and Laura Maloney (Sr., Barrington, Ill.) faced the No. 23 duo in the nation in Sarah Witten and Carolina Mayorga. The Buckeyes fought hard, but fell just short losing 8-4.
Trailing the match 1-0 the Buckeyes entered singles competition needing to win four of the six matches to come away with an upset, but it was not meant to be. Lindsay Williams (Fr., Beverly Hills, Mich.) got OSU rolling with a 6-1, 6-4 pasting of Jill Buckley at No. 6. Erica Fisk (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up the Buckeyes second win when she dropped Leigh Bradwell 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Pervez notched the Buckeyes third win in a thriller of a match at No. 3. The unranked sophomore beat No. 91 Brooke Skeen 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in a dramatic three-set thriller. The overall match was tied 3-3 overall with Dascoli and Carolina Mayorga playing at No. 1. A match that could have gone either way ended up going to Mayorga as she claimed a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory to seal the win for UK The Buckeyes are back on the courts Friday and Sunday for a pair of Big Ten matches. Friday OSU faces No. 41 Indiana at 2:30 p.m. and then returns Sunday to square off with Purdue at 10 a.m. Both matches will be contested at the Stickney Tennis Center, weather permitting.
