Women’s Tennis Dusts Off Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated Penn State 5-2 Sunday afternoon to improve to 4-0 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes have now won 11 regular-season Big Ten matches in a row. With the win OSU improves to 12-5 overall. Penn State falls to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten action.
The Buckeyes were victorious in four of the six singles matches. At No. 1 Kristy Dascoli (Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) downed Pilar Montgomery 6-4, 7-6. At No. 4 Erica Fisk (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.) beat Janelle Perez 7-6, 6-4. The wins were the 21st of the year for both Fisk and Dascoli. They lead the team in that category. At No. 3 Sadhaf Pervez continued to play well as of late by downing Judy Wang 6-1, 6-2.
Although the Buckeyes won the match one disappointing thing did happen at the No. 2 spot. Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich.) had her nine-match winning streak snapped by Rebecca Ho 6-3, 6-3. Previously Rincon’s last loss was Feb. 15 to Pepperdine’s Paola Palencia at the ITA National team Indoors.
In doubles the Buckeyes won two of the three matches to claim the point. At No. 1 Dascoli and Rincon dispatched Montgomery and Ho 8-6. Pervez and Laura Maloney (Sr., Barrington, Ill.) won 8-5 over Perez adn Wang at the No. 2 spot.
The Buckeyes are back in action Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, OSU hosts Michigan and then returns to the courts Sunday to play Michigan State. Both matches begin at 10 a.m. and will be contested in the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
