COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the temperature in the mid-30s, the Ohio State softball team (10-8) heated up in game two of a home-opening doubleheader with Oakland.
After falling to the Golden Grizzlies, 4-2, in game one, OSU rebounded with a 4-0 victory over OU in game two of the first twin bill of the season at Buckeye Field.
OSU provided all the scoring for the game in the first inning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead fueled by four hits.
Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) opened the Buckeye half of the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on an error by the OU catcher. Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) smacked a double to left center to score Smith. Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) then reached on a fielders’ choice. A sacrifice bunt by Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) advanced Link to third and Roth to second with one out. Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) singled to left center to score Link and move Roth to third. Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) brought in Roth with a single to left field. After OU starting pitcher Jaymie Voss was replaced by Julie Anderson, DeVries came home from third on a passed ball.
OSU had all the offense it would need for the game. DeVries allowed just two hits and racked up 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work to improve her record to 5-3.
OSU will host the 2001 Buckeye Invitational next Friday-Sunday, March 16-18.
