COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team is one of 12 teams which has qualified for the 2001 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships, the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Committee today announced. The championships, which include the national qualifiers, the team championships and the individual event finals, will be held April 5-7 in St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes have qualified for the team championships a record 20-consecutive times.
Ohio State (Big Ten), Oklahoma (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) and Massachusetts (Eastern College Athletic Conference) each earned automatic bids to the championships based on their first-place finishes at their respective conference championships. The other competitors include the top nine teams based on their national qualifications average, the top 12 all-around competitors who are not members of a selected team and the top 12 individuals per event who are not members of a selected team or have not already been selected in the all-around.
Teams and individuals are selected for the national qualifiers based on the national qualifications average formula. The NQA is computed as follows: select the three highest scores, counting no more than one home meet. Replace the highest of these three scores with the conference championship meet score and average these three scores. Individuals who compete in a final at their conference meet may use the finals score in place of a regular-season home or away meet score.
The following are the 12 teams selected to the championships, their rankings and their national qualification averages, separated by the qualifying session they will compete in. All sessions of the championships will be in St. John Arena on the Ohio State campus.
