Softball Defeats North Carolina, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$ATLANTA- After a rain delay pushed the starting time back forty minutes, the Ohio State softball team (21-8 overall) defeated North Carolina, 2-1, to extend its winning streak to 12 games and earn a No. 1 seed at the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech at the Al Bishop Softball Complex in Atlanta, Ga.%^$
%^$The tournament field of 25 was reduced to 12 for brackett play. OSU will face North Carolina in a rematch Sunday at 9 a.m.%^$
%^$Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) improved her record to 9-3, giving up five hits and registering five strikeouts in the complete-game effort. North Carolina fell to 19-12-1 with the loss.%^$
%^$OSU totaled eight hits to the Tarheels five. Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hillard Davidson) went 2-for-2 with her third home run in two days at the Buzz Classic. Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) went 2-for-3 and Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) hit 2-for-4. Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) accounted for OSU’s second run batted in.%^$
%^$DeVries gave up her first run in six starts (March 3) in the bottom of the first when UNC rightfielder Rosie Gustavon, who had doubled to left field two batters early, scored on another double to left field by catcher Natalie Anter.%^$
%^$The UNC advantage was shortlived,however. With one out in the top of the second inning, West drove an offering from Tarheel pitcher Radara McHugh over the fence in left center to knot the score at one.%^$
%^$In the top of the third inning, OSU scored what would turn out to be the winning run. With one out, Link reached first on a bunt. After Roth flied out to left field, DeVries singled to left field to put runners on first and second with two outs. Himes ripped a double down the left field line which wrapped around third base to score Link from second. DeVries attemped to score from first and was thrown out at home to end the inning. OSU already had a lead it would not relinquish, however.%^$
%^$DeVries allowed just one hit the rest of the way to secure the win.
