Track and Field Focuses on Tomorrow’s Finals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in their first day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The men are competing in State College Pa. while the women battle in West Lafayette Ind. After the first day of competition the men’s team is in fifth place and the women’s team is in third.
Ian Connor (Sr., Lexington, Ohio/ Northmoor) is the Big Ten Champion in the 3,000-meter run posting a time of 8:08.19. Teammate J.J O’Rielly (Jr., Dover, Ohio/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) finished ninth (8.17.80) while Derrick Butler ( So., Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) placed 11th (8.26.12) Dan Taylor captured a third -place finish in the men’s shot put (18.16m) while Drew Carter placed fifth in the long jump with a mark (7.26m)
Andrew Pierce (Sr., Yellow Springs, Ohio/ Yellow Springs) possessed the fastest time and broke the meet record of 46.42 in the 400-meter dash (46.40) Corey Johnson (Sr., Muskegon, Mich. /Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) finished 12th in the pole vault clearing a height of (4.80m)
For the women, Alexis McCall (Fr., Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) posted a second-place finish in the shot put in her first Big Ten Championship. (52’08. 25) Erin Carter (So., Logan, Ohio/Logan) finished 10th with a mark of 46’01. 00. Desiree Jones (Jr., Akron, Ohio/Buchtel) and Nicholette Chambers (So., New Haven, Conn./ James Hillhouse) took second and third in the women’s pentathlon scoring 3700 and 3625 respectively. Katy Stevens placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9.57.51 Donica Merriman (Sr., Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood) posted a provisional qualifying time of 8.20 in the 60 meter hurdles and will advance to the finals. The women’s distance medley finished seventh with a time of 12:19.77.
The Buckeyes will look for top performances in the final day of competition.
