No. 19 Women’s Tennis Rolls No. 8 UCLA – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 19 Ohio State women’s tennis team rebounded from two tough losses by defeating No. 8 UCLA, 5-2, Saturday to finish the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 1-2 record. OSU improves to 5-3, while UCLA falls to 3-4 this season.%^$
%^$ The Buckeyes won four of six singles matches. Three were won in dominating fashion while the fourth was a courageous victory by Kristy Dascoli (Sr., Bradenton, Fla.). At No. 1 Dascoli defeated Catherine Hawley in a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), thriller. At No. 2 Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich.) was challenged by Petya Marinova in the first set, but then breezed in the second to a 6-4, 6-0, victory. At No. 5 and No. 6 Claudia Castro (Jr., Dublin, Ohio) and Laura Maloney (Sr., Barrington, Ill.) had no trouble in their matches as they both won handily 6-0, 6-1. Castro bested Jennifer Donahue and Maloney beat Chelsea Godbey.%^$
%^$ OSU claimed victory in two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. The tandem of Maloney and Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J.) led the way with an 8-2 victory over Donahue and Maricko Fritz-Krockow at No. 2. At No. 3 Erica Fisk (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and Castro preserved OSU’s victory with a 9-7 win over Hawley and Godbey.%^$
%^$ Thursday, OSU lost to No. 7 Pepperdine, and No. 40 Oklahoma State defeated the Buckeyes Friday. The UCLA match was OSU’s last in the tournament and ends the Buckeyes’ eight-match road trip.%^$
%^$ The Buckeyes play their first home matches of the season Feb. 24. OSU hosts DePaul at 10 a.m and then return to the courts to battle in-state rival Akron at 7 p.m. Both matches will be contested in the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
