COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ninth-ranked Ohio State (21-2 overall, 13-2 Big Ten), with three players reaching double-figure kills, defeated Indiana 3-0 (30-27, 30-12, 30-14) Friday evening in Indiana’s University Gym. Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) scored a team-high 15 kills (.560) for Ohio State with Stacey Gordon adding 14 (.290) and Suzie Stiling 12 (.667). Hoosier Christina Archibald (Fr., Belleville, Ill.) had a team-high eight kills (-.029) for Indiana with Melissa Brewer (So., Bloomington, Ind.) adding seven (-.048).
Indiana held early leads of 5-4 and 6-5 before an IU service error and back-to-back kills by Botica gave OSU an 8-6 lead. Indiana closed the lead to one at 10-9, but two kills by Botica and another by Stiling opened a 13-9 lead. Gordon pushed the lead to five at 23-18, Ohio State. The Buckeyes held a 28-25 lead before kills by Brewer and Archibald cut the Ohio State lead to one at 28-27. Indiana’s service error set game point at 29-27 and a kill by Stiling ended the game at 30-27. Ohio State hit .283 for the game to .200 for Indiana. OSU’s Botica collected eight kills in the game with Stiling adding six.
Ohio State began game two with a 5-0 run coming off a Botica kill and four IU errors. Leading, 9-3, Ohio State scored the next nine points with two kills from Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.), a kill from Botica, two ace serves from Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.), a block from Draeger and Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill) and three IU errors for an 18-3 lead. The Buckeyes reached game point at 29-9 with a Gordon kill. Kills by Archibald and Monique Pritz (So., Columbus, Ind.) and an OSU error stopped three game points before a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-12. Ohio State hit .500 for the game while Indiana was held to -.100. OSU’s Gordon had a game-high four kills with Botica and Draeger collecting three each.
Indiana held a 1-0 lead off an OSU service error to open game three. OSU responded with a Botica kill, an IU attack error, a block by Botica and Stiling and a Hoosier setting error for a 4-1 lead. A Buckeye service error cut the margin to 4-2. The Buckeyes then scored the next eight points to take a 12-2 lead. The run consisted of two kills each from Stiling and Gordon, an ace serve by Botica, a block by Virtue and Stiling and two IU errors. The Buckeyes took the lead to 14 at 28-14, before kills by Botica and Stiling closed the game at 30-14. OSU hit .538 for the game to -.063 for the Hoosiers. Gordon had a game-high five kills with Botica and Stiling adding four each.
For the match, Ohio State hit .404 to .029 for the Illini. The Buckeyes had a 48-28 margin in kills and outserved Indiana, 5-2. OSU’s Virtue had a match-high three aces for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 44-29 advantage in digs with Virtue, Gordon and Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) recording nine each. Ohio State had a 7-4 margin in blocks with Stiling collecting a match-high four assists.
Ohio State now travels to Illinois for a 7 p.m. CST Saturday match with the Illini.
