COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tenth-ranked Ohio State (20-2 overall, 12-2 Big Ten), with a career-high 30 kills (.412) from Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario), defeated Purdue (3-19, 1-13) 3-1 (26-30, 30-21, 30-19, 30-19). OSU’s Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) added 22 kills (304) and 15 digs with Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) adding 11 kills. Purdue’s Maegan Petersen (Sr., Waupun, Wis.) had a team-high 15 kills (.375) for the Boilermakers. The Buckeye victory gives Ohio State its second consecutive 20-win season and the 11th in the last 13 years.
In game one, a 30-26 Boilermaker win, Purdue hit .438 and had only one hitting error, while Ohio State hit .250. The Buckeyes held a 23-21 lead in game two before scoring the final seven points to win, 30-21, and tie the match at one game each. Ohio State hit .205 for the game to -.048 for Purdue. The Buckeyes picked up 30-19 wins in games three and four. OSU hit .400 in game three to .182 for Purdue. Game four had Ohio State hitting .457 to Purdue’s .171.
For the match, Ohio State hit .323 to .169 for Purdue. After hitting .438 in game one, the Boilermakers hit .091 for the final three games. The Buckeyes had a 79 to 44 advantage in kills and outserved the Boilermakers, nine to five. OSU’s Draeger had a match-high five ace serves while Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) had three. OSU had a 66-40 margin in digs with Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) collecting a career-high 19 digs. Purdue did outblocked Ohio State, 14-4, with Eryn Leach (So., Saratoga, Calif.) recording a match-high seven blocks on one solo and six assists. Buckeye setter Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.) had a season-high 71 assists for Ohio State.
Ohio State continues on the road next week when they face Indiana Friday and Illinois Saturday.
