COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ninth-ranked Ohio State (22-3 overall, 14-3 Big Ten) suffered its third defeat of the season to unranked Michigan State (17-7, 10-7) in four games Friday night in St. John Arena. The 25-30, 30-24, 23-30, 24-30 loss saw the Spartans outhit the Buckeyes .293 to .235 and have a major blocking advantage collecting 15 team blocks to three for Ohio State. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a match-high 23 kills for the Buckeyes with Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) adding 21. Also in double figures were Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) with 11 and Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) 10. Michigan State countered that with four players in double-figure kills. Erin Hartley had a team-high 14, with Kim Schram adding 13. Kyla Smith contributed 11 and Angela Morley 10.
Michigan State outhit Ohio State in game one .393 to .200 in taking a 30-25 win. The Buckeyes responded with a 30-24 win in game two, while outhitting the Spartans, .268 to .051. Michigan State hit .394 in games three and four to take the games, 30-23, and 30-24. OSU hit .263 in game three and .211 in game four.
The Spartans collected 15 blocks in the match with Morley recording a match-high nine blocks on two solos and seven assists. Setter Nikki Colson contributed five blocks on two solo and three assists. MSU’s Hartley had a team-high nine digs in the match. OSU had a 45-44 edge in digs with Gordon recording a team-high 14 digs and Botica adding 11. The Spartans had a 6-5 edge in ace serves with Smith, Hartley and Emily Engel recording two each. OSU’s Draeger had a match-high three. OSU had 15 service errors to five for Michigan State. Ohio State will face Michigan (12-12, 8-9) at 7 p.m. Saturday, while Michigan State travels to Penn State (19-6, 12-5). The Wolverines lost a five-game decision (30-23, 22-30, 30-26, 25-30, 9-15) to the Nittany Lions tonight.
