COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 11th-ranked Ohio State (13-1 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Wisconsin (12-2, 6-0) in a three-game sweep (30-25, 30-28, 30-16) by the Badgers. Wisconsin’s Sherisa Livingston (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif) scored a match-high 21 kills for the Badgers with Lisa Zukowski (So., West Bend, Wis.) and Erin Byrd (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) adding nine each. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a team-high 14 kills for the Buckeyes with Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) and Trine Melsether (Fr., Aalesund, Norway) adding seven each. OSU played the weekend matches without outside hitter Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario). She was held out with an injury.%^$
%^$With the score tied at ten, in game one, a Shelly Draeger’s (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) ace serve and a Badger error opened a 12-10 Ohio State lead. The Badgers came back to tie the game at 13 with a Lizzy Fitzgerald (Sr., New Orleans, La.) block. The Buckeyes kept the margin close but could not regain the lead. OSU, with a Gordon kill, closed the lead to one at 25-24. Two kills by Livingston put Wisconsin ahead 27-24. A Badger error cut the lead to 27-25. Kills by Zukowski and Amy Hultgren (Jr., Spencer, Iowa) set game point at 29-25. A block by Fitzgerald and Hultgren ended the game at 30-25. Wisconsin hit .279 in the game to .135 for OSU.%^$
%^$Wisconsin held a six-point lead midway in game two at 19-13. The Buckeyes worked the margin down to three points at 23-20. A Gordon kill, a Badger error and a Melsether kill tied the match at 23. OSU took a 25-23 lead with two Melsether kills. Livingston responded for the Badgers with two kills to tie the game at 25 and a Buckeye error put Wisconsin in the lead at 26-25. OSU tied the game at 26 with a Stiling kill. Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Stiling combined for a block to give Ohio State a 27-26 margin. Livingston’s kill tied the game at 27. A Badger error returned the lead to OSU at 28-27 but a Zukowski kill tied the game at 28. Two Buckeye errors gave Wisconsin a 30-28 win. In the game, Ohio State hit .229 to Wisconsin’s .200.%^$
%^$Ohio State enjoyed a 1-0 lead in game three from a Gordon kill. At 2-2, the Badgers scored the next five points (7-2) and quickly took control of the game, winning 30-16. Wisconsin hit .344 for the game to .083 for the Buckeyes.%^$
%^$Wisconsin hit .262 for the match to .157 for Ohio State. The Badgers had a 53-40 advantage in kills and a 50-44 margin in digs. UW outserved OSU five to two and had an eight to seven margin in blocks.%^$
%^$Ohio State returns to St. John Arena next week for matches against Iowa (2-10, 0-6) and Minnesota (10-4, 4-2). OSU faces the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12 and hosts the Golden Gophers at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14 in a match that will be carried by Fox Sports-Chicago to be shown at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15.
