COLUMBUS, Ohio -The Ohio State men’s golf team travels to Dallas, Texas, Oct. 8-9 to battle several of the same teams it faced last week at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, hosted by the Buckeyes at The OSU Scarlet Course.
Ohio State combined to fire a 2-under par 282 to finish in the No. 4 spot of the Preview. The Buckeyes were in the No. 12 position after the first day.
Clemson won the tournament championship by one stroke over Wake Forest. Clemson’s D.J. Trahan, playing in the final group of the day, birdied No. 18 to give the Tigers the victory.
The Buckeyes started the final day in the No. 8 position behind some of the nation’s best teams. Ohio State had a pair of individuals shoot sub-par rounds, including a career-best round of 67 turned in by senior Doug Wade (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central) and a 1-under 70 by junior Justin Collins (Ironton, Ohio/Ironton). It was the second-consecutive round under par for Collins.
Wade’s final day effort placed him tied for second (70-71-70=211) among all individuals in the event, which pitted the top teams from the 2001 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship tournament. Ohio State will host the 2002 NCAA event May 27-June 1 on the Scarlet Course.
Texas’ John Klauk, a senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., set an Ohio State Scarlet Course record Sunday with a 65. Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach, said his team’s performance is a building block for the remainder of the season.
“(The final day of the Preview) was a great finish for us after the start we had in the opening round,” Brown said. “I was proud of the guys and the way they fought back. We faced some great competition from some of the best team’s in the country.
“It was a really good start for our team this year,” Brown said. “We will face most of these teams in a couple weeks at the Red River Classic in Dallas. This event showed we could have a pretty decent golf team this year.”
Lineup set for Red River
The five players traveling to Dallas for the Red River Classic qualified in practice rounds played Oct. 1-4. Seniors Doug Wade, Ryan Dennis (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Jason Oien (Westerville, Ohio/North) alone with junior Justin Collins will be playing in their second-consecutive tournament for the Buckeyes. Scott Anderson (So., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) will be making his first appearance in the OSU lineup. He did not crack the lineup as a freshman but was an OSU Scholar Athlete in his rookie season.
Ohio State Welcomes NCAA Tournament for 10th Time at Scarlet Course
The 2002 NCAA Tournament will be played at The OSU Scarlet Course May 27-June 1, 2001 in Columbus, Ohio. It marks the 10th time the NCAA championship will be determined on Ohio State’s historic Scarlet Course and the first time since 1995.
The Buckeyes missed qualifying for the 2001 NCAA Tournament by one stroke but expect to make a push in 2002 to play on their home course in NCAA Tournament play.
Brown has Veteran Squad Returning
Ohio State returns four student-athletes who played the majority of the 2000-01 schedule for Jim Brown, Buckeye head coach.
Brown, in his 29th season as the men’s golf coach at Ohio State, has led the Buckeyes to 22 NCAA Tournament appearances. His teams have won 16 Big Ten titles and has finished among the Top 2 in the Big Ten Conference 24 times.
Leading the Buckeyes this year are a trio of seniors. Jason Oien (Westerville, Ohio), Ryan Dennis (Stow, Ohio) and Doug Wade (Lima, Ohio) are the most experienced Buckeyes in 2001-02. Junior Justin Collins (Ironton, Ohio) has played in all but one tournament in each of the last two years. Sophomore Kevin Hall (Cincinnati, Ohio) came out of a redshirt season last year to help the Buckeyes to a pair of tournament wins.
Newcomers Could Become a Factor
Freshman newcomers Darren Lundgren (Baldwin, Mo.) and Matt Boudreau (St. Ann, Ill.) each are expected to push the veterans for a spot among the Top 5 as the season progresses.
Lundgren was an American Junior Golf Association All-American and played for the USA World Junior Golf Cup Team which defeated Canada at St. Andrew’s golf course in Scotland.
Boudreau was the Illinois Junior National Champion in 2000, the same year he led his high school team to the Illinois State championship.
