%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-After three days of the 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships in Madison, Wis., the Ohio State women’s tennis team was on the courts all day Sunday competing in the singles and doubles consolation brackets. Four Buckeyes were in the singles draw and one doubles team remained in the mix when the day started at Wisconsin’s Nielsen Tennis Stadium.%^$
%^$Two of the four-Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West) and Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike)-survived the day and will compete Monday. Rincon won two matches, both by the score 6-1, 6-3. In the first round she dropped Kate Boomershine of Illinois and then returned to beat Notre Dame’s Nina Vaughn in the second round. Because of the bracket setup, she has a bye into the semifinals. Rincon will face the winner of the match between DePaul’s Marina Parashkevova and Western Michigan’s Frederika Girsang.%^$
%^$In the first round, Fisk defeated Illinois’ Jennifer McGaffigan-the Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season-in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-4. She then dropped Shana McElroy of Wisconsin in a marathon of a match, 7-6, 7-5, 5-7, (10-2). Unlike Rincon, Fisk does not benefit from a fortunate bracket layout and will face Katie McGaffigan of Wisconsin in the quarterfinals.%^$
%^$Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West), and Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) also participated in the singles consolation draw. Pervez won her first round match, 6-3, 6-3, against DePaul’s Szilvia Kelemen before falling to Lisa D’Amelio of Eastern Michigan, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. Matko was defeated in the first round by Girsang, 6-4, 6-1.%^$
%^$Rincon and Fisk were also in action in doubles. The tandem beat Natyshak and Wasielewski of Toledo, 8-6, before falling in the second round to Marquette’s Briseno and Espinosa, 8-5.%^$
%^$The annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships concludes Tuesday. OSU has three players–Fisk, Rincon and Lindsay Bryan (Fr., New Orleans, La./Ursuline Academy)–remaining in singles competition. Bryan is competing in the qualifying singles consolation bracket.%^$
