COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s soccer team (10-3-2 overall, 1-2-1 in the Big Ten) recorded one of the biggest wins in program history with a stunning 3-2 double-overtime upset of No. 5 St. John’s (9-1-3, 5-0-3 Big East). Co-captain Andy Kreinbrink (Sr., Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) scored the gamewinner at the 107:41 mark, exclamating an amazing comeback as the Buckeyes battled from a 2-0 deficit. The loss was St. Johns’ first of the season, snapping its 13-match unbeaten streak
The game was played at Adelphi University’s Stiles Field in Garden City, N.Y. because SJU’s new soccer stadium is still under construction. A steady and consistent wind played a major factor in the game, as four of the five goals were scored in the same net.
“This is a tremendous win for us,” head soccer coach, John Bluem said. “We were losing 2-0 at the half. There was a strong, significant breeze throughout the game. We defended against it in the first half and played with it in the second.”
Chad Brown (So., Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) started in goal for the Buckeyes for just the second time this year. He had not played in a game since Sept. 17, a 5-0 shutout win against Denison, but came up huge for the Buckeyes.
“We wanted to mix things up,” Bluem said. “Chad turned in a solid performance. He made a great save in the first overtime before Kreinbrink won it for us in the second.”
The Buckeyes allowed two goals in the first 45 minutes to trail at the half. Christopher Wingert and Jeff Matteo tallied for SJU as the Red Storm outshot the Buckeyes, 8-2, in the period.
OSU began its comeback at the 56:51 mark as Justin Cook (So., Winter Springs, Fla./Oviedo) recorded his fifth goal of the year. He took a Peter Withers (Fr., Portland, Ore./Jesuit) pass and drilled a 15-yard shot into the upper corner of the goal past SJU goalkeeper Guy Hertz. Entering the match today, Hertz had allowed only six goals. He gave up three to OSU and ended the game with two saves. Sammy Tamporello (Fr., Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) evened the score at the 61:05 mark when he notched his third goal of the year. He slipped a 12-yard shot past Hertz. Cook assisted on the play.
In the first overtime, OSU had the wind on its side but was outshot, 7-1. Brown was spectacular in goal, recording five saves in the period. He faced 18 shots in the game, 10 of which were on goal and recorded eight saves. In the second overtime, OSU was going into the stiff wind, but that did not factor into Kreinbrink’s winning goal. Tamporello took a corner kick that was punched out by Hertz. Kreinbrink was there to head the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the year and to give OSU a huge win over a Top 5 opponent.
“This is the first loss for St. John’s and I am really proud of our guys.” Bluem said. “This is a great win for our program.”
The Buckeyes return home to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium for a 7 p.m. Nov. 2 matchup against Michigan. The match is the last home game of the season for OSU and will honor the Buckeyes’ three seniors.
