Women’s Tennis Players Fall At ITA Regional Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-Four members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team began main draw singles play at the annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships on Saturday in Madison, Wis. All four received automatic bids into the field and did not have to compete in the qualifying rounds on Thursday and Friday.%^$
%^$Three of the four-Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West), Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West), and Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike)-posted first round wins. Rincon, the tournaments No. 4 seed, wasted little time in advancing with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Minnesota’s Valerie Vladea. Matko dropped DePaul’s Szilvia Kelemen, 7-5, 6-3 and Fisk-a No. 9 seed-defeated Inga Radel of Indiana, 6-3, 3-0 (retired).%^$
%^$The second round of the draw was not as fortunate as all three Buckeyes lost in three sets. Rincon was bested by Eastern Michigan’s Rebecca Hawkins, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4). Simona Petruitiu, a No. 9 seed from Northwestern, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, dispatched Matko. Illinois State’s Liina Suurvarik defeated Fisk, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3.%^$
%^$Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills), a No. 9 seed, fell in the first round to Kylene Wong of Northern Iowa, 6-3, 6-4.%^$
%^$Three doubles teams also were in action Saturday. The tandem of Pervez and Colville beat Barnes and Yung of Indiana, 8-2, before losing to the draw’s No. 4 seed Schlukebir and Tran, 8-2, also of IU. Matko teamed with Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) for a second round match against Remynse and Girsang of Western Michigan. The OSU squad lost, 8-5. Claudia Castro (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas) partnered with Lindsey Adams (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) in the second round. The two were defeated by No. 8 seed Vladea and Havelkova of Minnesota, 8-2.%^$
%^$The annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships run from Thursday to Tuesday. OSU has four remaining players in singles competition-all in the consolation bracket-and one doubles teams left in the consolation draw.%^$
