COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State (14-1 overall, 6-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad defeated Iowa (2-12, 0-7) in four games. The 30-22, 28-30, 30-17, 30-11 victory for Ohio State was highlighted by a team-high 21 kills by Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario). Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) added 14 kills for the Buckeyes with Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) contributing 12. Iowa’s Sara Meyermann (Sr., Camanche, Iowa) had a match-high 22 kills for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa closed to 3-2 early in game one on a Meyermann kill, but the Buckeyes scored the next six points on a Stiling kill, three kills by Botica, an ace serve by Stiling and a Hawkeye error to put Ohio State ahead 9-2. The Buckeyes held the lead and Botica’s ninth kill of the game closed the game at 30-22. Ohio State hit .372 for the game to .237 for Iowa
Back-to-back kills by Renee Hill (So., Spring, Texas) gave Iowa a 3-2 lead in game two. The Hawkeyes ran the score to 6-2 off kills by Meyermann and Laura Simpson (Fr., Sassafras, Australia) and a block by Meyermann and Simpson. Iowa held an 11-6 lead when OSU rallied with kills by Botica, Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill), Stiling, a block by Botica and Baker and an ace by Stiling to tie the game at 11. At 14-all, kills by Meyermann and Hill opened a 16-14 Iowa lead. The Hawkeyes held the lead until a ball handling error tied the game at 24. A solo block by Stiling gave OSU a 25-24 margin but a Meyermann kill tied the game at 25. After ties at 26 and 28, a kill by Carolyn Giese (So., Dubuque, Iowa) set game point for Iowa and a Cathi Netemeyer (Fr., Los Fesnos, Texas) ended the game at 30-28, Iowa. The Hawkeyes hit .356 for the game to .286 for Ohio State. Meyermann had nine kills in the game for Iowa.
With kills by Stiling and Botica and an ace by Stiling, Ohio State opened game three with a 3-0 lead. OSU built up an early 10-3 lead, expanding it to Draeger’s game point kill at 30-17. The Buckeyes hit .313 for the game to Iowa’s .133. The Buckeyes had six aces in the game, three by Stiling.
OSU broke a 2-2 tied in game four with kills by Baker and Botica and two Iowa errors to take a 6-2 lead. At 10-5, the Buckeyes scored nine consecutive points to go ahead 19-5. The game ended with an Iowa error for a 30-11 OSU win. The Buckeyes hit .450 for the game to a -.219 for Iowa.
Ohio State hit .340 for the game to .152 for Iowa. The Buckeyes had a 66-38 advantage in kills, a 61-48 margin in digs, a 15-4 edge in aces and outblocked Iowa , 9-7. OSU’s Stiling had a match-high five aces with Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) adding four and Botica three.
OSU hosts No. 20 Minnesota (10-5, 4-3) Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena. The Gophers lost Friday to No. 11 Penn State (12-3, 5-2) in a three-game sweep (30-22, 30-19, 30-27).
